Get your training funded!
Now is the ideal time to make a start on gaining new skills, or upgrading your existing skills, to help you get the job you want.
The Victorian Training Guarantee is making vocational education and training more accessible to people who do not hold a post-school qualification, or who want to gain a higher level qualification than they already hold.
There is now an unlimited number of government subsidised training places available to people who meet the eligibility criteria.
What’s the criteria?
You are eligible for a government subsidised training place if you:
1. Meet one of the following citizen/residency status:
- Australian citizen
- Australian Permanent Resident (holder of a permanent visa)
- holder of a Special Category Visa (sub-class 444, New Zealand citizen)
- East Timorese asylum seeker
- holder of a Temporary Protection Visa
2. And are any of the following:
- a young person under 20 years
- an applicant seeking a foundation skills course
- an applicant who is an apprentice
- an applicant seeking a higher qualification than the highest qualification already held
Climbing the education ladder
Choosing the right training is important to your future.
It’s important to choose the right course to make the most of the opportunities provided by the Victorian Training Guarantee.
For example, if you are 20+ and completed a Certificate IV in Aged Care and then discover you don’t like the work, or there is no work available in that area, you won’t be eligible for a subsidised place in another Certificate IV course (except those in the foundation skills category).
That’s why it’s important to be informed and realistic about a career path before undertaking training for qualifications in that area.
Under the Victorian Training Guarantee, if you are eligible you can access subsidised training in an accredited course more than once – so long as you are applying for a qualification that is
- higher than any qualifications you hold already
- is from the foundation skills category
- or is being undertaken as an apprenticeship
For example, after you complete a Certificate II in Hospitality, you could get government subsidised training to do a Certificate III in Hospitality. This gives people the opportunity to continue to improve their qualifications and job opportunities throughout their life.
Under 20 years of age?
If you are under 20 years of age, you can access government-subsidised training for qualifications at any level and as many times as you like.
What does the government contribute?
The government contributes on average between 70-90 per cent of the cost of training. The balance of the cost of training is made up from a student tuition fee contribution. There may be additional fees and charges.
How much the government will subsidise a course under the Victorian Training Guarantee depends on the level of qualification. In general, foundation skills courses, apprenticeships and traineeships get a higher government subsidy.
The subsidy is paid to the training provider after the student enrols. It is paid monthly in arrears for training delivered.
What will I need to pay?
You may need to contribute the student tuition fee and may need to pay for materials and other costs such as student services and amenities fees.
20+ and not sure if your qualification deems you ineligible?
To help determine prior qualification that may effect your eligibility (if you are aged 20+) the following should be taken into account.
Qualifications that are considered equivalent to a Certificate II course include:
- VCE
- VCAL (Senior)
- the International Baccalaureate Diploma
- senior secondary school certificates from other Australian states and jurisdictions.
Qualifications that aren't equivalent to a Certificate II course include:
- VCAL (Intermediate)
- VCAL (Foundation)
- any course from the ‘Foundation Skills’ category
