Communication
Traditionally most of our students have been over 18 and as such we cannot communicate with their parents or release personal information about them without their consent under the Privacy Act. However, at enrolment we will ask your son or daughter to give us contact details of their parents or guardians in case of emergency.
Our communication policy applies as follows:
Absences
Unexplained absences of 15 to 18 year olds will be reported to employers in the case of apprentices and trainees (mandatory), schools in the case of school-based programs and parents in the case of full time Box Hill Institute students who do not present at school.
Illness
If a student alerts a staff member that they are ill, we will make every effort to contact you or the emergency contact person as given on the enrolment form. In the case of an injury or more serious illness we will administer first aid and seek medical attention.
Excursions
Box Hill Institute has a policy requiring parents of students under 18 years to agree in writing to their son or daughter taking part in any scheduled excursions.
Reporting to parents
Teachers will talk with students having difficulties in coping with a course. If necessary, they will contact the student's parent and try to resolve the problem.
Students may receive a report on their progress depending on the course. However, the usual practice is to issue students with a Statement of Results or a Statement of Attainment and the appropriate award when they have completed their course.
