The Centre for Student Support Services delivers free services and programs to help students succeed with study and enjoy their time at Box Hill Institute. Some programs or support are for particular groups of students while others are open to all students.

Student Activities and Representative Committees (SARC)
SARC runs activities, events and the student lounges. Lounges have microwaves, TV, comfortable seating and games. Students can participate in student representation and help with the student magazine The Box, the diary or StudentWeb. You can gain experience, develop your skills, meet other students, have fun and add value to your studies.

For more information, ring (03) 9286 9904 or (03) 9286 9676, or drop in to a SARC office, near the student lounges on each campus.

Educational and personal counselling
If you need help to learn more effectively or you feel stressed or overwhelmed by a personal issue, you can make an appointment to talk with a professional student counsellor.  Counsellors can assist with all sorts of issues, including coping with change or stress, time management and study skills.

Counselling is available at each campus. Online counselling is also available to enrolled students.

Welfare services
Specialist welfare officers provide a broad range of welfare services and can assist with enquiries about fees, social security allowances and benefits, applications for course-related financial support and accommodation. There is also an accommodation register on StudentWeb.

Careers counselling
You can clarify your career interests, discover new possibilities and learn more about education and training options by talking with a careers counsellor. The ‘Careers’ section of StudentWeb has information on events, seminars and expos and links to useful sites.

Support for students with disabilities
Our Disability Liaison Service can assist students with a disability to succeed in their studies at the Institute. You can consult confidentially and, if eligible, register for support (you will need recent documentation of your disability or medical condition). A learning support plan can then be negotiated and reviewed as necessary.

Learning support
Learning support teachers can help if you are having difficulties with either Maths or English in your courses. They can work through your class work with you to help you understand and successfully complete your course.

Support for younger students
Services and support are available to young people to help their transition and growth within the Institute, including the youth pathways program, workshops, activities, shop front counselling and fun lunchtime sessions.

Support for Indigenous students
If you are a student of Indigenous background, you may choose to liaise with the Koori liaison officer, who provides cultural, study and general support to Indigenous students. The Koori liaison officer can also help in the Institute’s cross-cultural awareness and its delivery of productive educational pathways for Indigenous students.

Support programs and workshops
Workshops and group programs run throughout the year to help students with strategies and skills in transition into TAFE, study, personal development, coping, self-management, healthy living and time and stress management. The Institute’s StudentWeb has the latest information on dates and resources.
