Welfare Services

Becoming a student can be both rewarding and challenging. There are many decisions to make. From time to time, circumstances change in our lives.

For example:

  • we can’t pay our fees
  • there are problems at home
  • we have nowhere to live
  • personal problems interfere with our studies.

Issues such as homelessness or a financial crisis can cause great stress. The welfare officer at Student Support Services can help students' source information and services to help them manage. These may include:

  • information and assistance with Centrelink benefits (for example eligibility for payments, application forms, criteria and entitlement figures)
  • accommodation resources
  • financial assistance through tuition fee deferments or financial hardship grounds (if eligible).
  • internal and external referrals to other services, such as counselling, family support or mediation, crisis accommodation or housing services or support. These other services may be within the Centre for Student Support Services, available from elsewhere in Box Hill Institute or they might be community-based services
  • information about services that provide free meals, food vouchers, clothes, or cheap furniture
  • help to formulate a budget through planning and prioritising resources
  • assistance in orientation around Melbourne, Box Hill and the Institute (for example, for rural students considering attending the Institute)
  • general advice and information.

The welfare officer is available at enrolments on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays to provide practical assistance, information and support.
