Box Hill Institute’s Centre for Information Communications Technology has announced great news for staff and students in 2010, with wireless network and broadband upgrades, plus PC replacement ready to take effect in the new year. This comes as the culmination of significant work behind the scenes during 2009, and will represent a quantum leap for students in particular.
The new features will incorporate:
- Wireless Network Upgrade
This is available from 1.02.10 and allows:
- Hot spots throughout all campuses.
- Full access to Intranet and Internet via student accounts.
- Guest logins for visitors and exchange students.
- Teaching teams will have full access to internet/intranet via Network logons.
- Managers will have no cost data roaming for iPhones on campus.
- Mobile VoIP handsets (Cisco cordless phones) will be useable on all campuses – allowing reduced mobile phone costs.
- Access to SMS resources on supported devices (new in 2010).
- Broadband Upgrade
- In 2009, the bandwidth was increased from 30M to 50Mbps. In February 2010, this will be increased to 100 Mbps.
- Student quota management will be in place to fully support educational delivery, and equal access across student bodies.
-
Planned Replacement of PCs

In January – April 2010, 1,000 x computers will be replaced in classrooms and administration to allow better and faster computing.
-
The Institute will allow every computer able to run the full ADOBE Suite of products to be installed and used for teaching and administration purposes.
