Box Hill business breakfasts are renowned for their interesting guest speakers, but none more so than the recent guest, crime writer and award winning journalist, John Silvester, also known as ‘Sly of the Underworld’.
John opened his talk stating that not all crime happens in the salacious streets of Carlton, it’s just that many of the gangland criminals we have all become familiar with frequented the area - crime can happen anywhere, and it really doesn’t pay.
The hundred or so business breakfast guests were enthralled by John’s unique perspective of accounts relating to Melbourne’s gangland war and the events that have occurred since 1999, which have become the basis of the Underbelly series of books and television series of the same name, which John was co-author.
The guests were treated to a delicious breakfast and had the opportunity of winning some great prizes including the full set of Underbelly books, editions 1-11.
With a room full of business people, that included many lawyers, John recounted the stories of Carl Williams, the Moran brothers and the battle for supremacy to supply drugs in Melbourne. He spoke of some of the criminal characters and detailed scenarios from their poorly planned crimes which amused the guests.
Business breakfasts are a great way to network within the Box Hill community, to entertain clients or just get together to hear some great speakers - a great start to the day.
Former Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner is the guest speaker at the next Box Hill Institute Business Breakfast, to be held on Friday 27 May and enquiries can be made to 9286 9499 or businessbreakfast@boxhill.edu.au
