Sustainability Success at BHI

On July 6, the Victorian Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) iAward winners were announced at KPMG’s offices in Melbourne.

Box Hill Institute was the winner in the category of “Sustainability and Green IT” at the Victorian iAwards for the development of the Vocational Graduate Certificate in ICT Sustainability. The award was presented by the Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Development, Industry and Trade, the Hon Ms. Jaala Pulford.

The AIIA is the peak ICT industry body, and the iAwards are the ICT Industry’s leading awards program; they honour the finest Australian innovations and achievements in ICT. This annual event, staged by the AIIA, provides the ICT Industry with a platform to showcase, and in many cases launch, Australia's ICT success stories.

Simon Taylor, Box Hill Institute’s Centre Manager for ICT, said: “The Vocational Graduate Certificate in ICT Sustainability, delivered through the Institute’s Centre for ICT, has been developed to provide students with the ICT skills, knowledge and confidence to support Australian Industry in reducing its carbon footprint, and planning for a more profitable and sustainable future”.

The development, accreditation, marketing and delivery of this qualification has been a team effort, bringing together people within the Centre for ICT, the wider Institute and Industry who share a desire to create a more sustainable future to ultimately benefit Australian industries and communities.

Mr Taylor said: “Although this has been a team effort, I would like to make special mention of a couple of people that have been pivotal in developing this innovative qualification: Frank Mentiplay, Degree Teacher in ICT, who developed the vocational outcomes of the program and drove it through the national accreditation process, and Kam Ho, Degree Teacher in ICT – an ICT Sustainability expert who developed the course content and training material”.

As the holder of the Victorian iAward, the Centre will now progress to represent Victoria in this category at the National iAwards. The National iAward winners in 18 categories will be announced on August 5 at an iAward Gala dinner attended by over 1000 leading members of the Australian ICT community.
