What does this course involve?

Thinking about a career in the building industry? This Intermediate VCAL program is designed to incorporate an applied building and construction trades taster component to your studies to help you make an informed choice of direction.

You will gain basic knowledge and skills for work in the carpentry, cabinet making, joinery, stair making and shop fitting trades.
You will also study broader work-related skills, literacy, numeracy and personal development. A large amount of the training is practical and you will work on building-related projects through in the community.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with knowledge and skills to enhance employment opportunities in a range of trade areas. Roles may include cabinet maker, shop fitter, stair builder or general builder.

This course is Government accredited and has National recognition.

What further study options will I have?

At the end of this course you may be eligible to progress into the Senior VCAL course, gain full time employment or apply for entry into a pre-apprenticeship, Certificate III (or higher)courses such as Certificate III in General Construction or the Certificate III in Furniture Making.

You must be 16 years old and have successfully completed Year 10 or equivalent.

How do I apply?

Direct entry - Beginning of year.

Selection is a three stage process.

Stage 1: Attend a VCAL Information Session at (bookings not required):
  • Open Day Sunday 28th August or
  • Wednesday 12th October at 6:00pm (Elgar Auditorium) or
  • Wednesday 16th November at 6:00pm (Elgar Auditorium)

Stage 2: Complete and submit an application form (handed out during the Information Session).

Stage 3: Attend an interview.
