What does this course involve?

This program will give you both the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) Pre-apprenticeship and an Intermediate VCAL Certificate. These qualifications are highly sought after by employers of apprentices.
You will gain the basic knowledge and skills for work in the building industry, such as how to communicate effectively in the workplace, adhere to OHS requirements, building structures, use carpentry tools and framing types.
You will also study work related skills, literacy, numeracy and personal development. A large amount of the training is practical and you will work on building-related projects through community service or industry placements.

This course may provide you with the knowledge and skills to enhance your employment opportunities in a range of trade areas. Roles may include Building, Apprentice, Carpentry Apprentice or other trade related roles.

What further study options will I have?

At the end of this course you may be eligible to progress into the Senior VCAL program or apply for entry into an Apprenticeship (or higher) courses such as the Certificate III in General Construction or the Certificate III in Furniture Making.

You must be 16 years old and have successfully completed Year 10 or equivalent.

How do I apply?

Direct entry - Beginning of year.
Selection is a three stage process.
Stage 1: Attend a VCAL Information Session at (bookings not required):

  • Wednesday 16th November at 6:00pm (Elgar Auditorium)

Stage 2: Complete and submit an application form (handed out during the Information Session).
Stage 3: Attend an interview.

  1. Tuition Fee - $1.62 per hour (max $875.00)
  2. Concession Tuition Fee - $105.00
  3. Service and Amenities Fee - $65.00 or 90.00

Fee for Service - this course will cost $14,000.00 if you aren't eligible for government subsidised training.

Advanced Standing is approved recognition of prior learning that is displayed as an Exemption (EX) on the student’s academic record. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to undertake Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) induction training within the construction industry.
It requires the ability to demonstrate personal awareness of OHS legislative requirements and the basic principles of risk management and prevention of injury and illness in the construction industry.
Licensing requirements will apply to this unit of competency depending on the regulatory requirements of each jurisdiction.
