What does this course involve?

This computer systems engineering course is designed to give you advanced skills in managing computers and computer networks.

You will develop practical skills in computer maintenance, operating systems, network configuration and maintenance, interface design and internet working technologies.

You will learn how to develop complex testing and evaluation features and diagnose faults in advanced systems.

You will also learn how to provide technical leadership in the workplace and gain training in the following vendor certifications; Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO), Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices (ICND), Wireless LAN for Field Engineers and Cisco Call Manager. You will also study (Linux+, and Net+), Microsoft (Certified Professional (MCP) Systems Administrator (MCSA), and Linux Administration.

This course is also available to international students.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with employment opportunities as a network administrator, computer hardware technician, network designer or systems administrator.

You may find work in financial institutions, educational and government organisations, the military, hospitals, telecommunications providers or computer support companies.

What further study options will I have?

Students who successfully complete an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering who wish to progress into an Associate Degree in Computer Systems (Networking) or Bachelor of Computer Systems (Networking) will receive credit for eight subjects or the equivalent of 1 year’s duration.

Can I apply?

  • You must have successfully completed Year 12 (VCE) of education, or equivalent.
  • For Year 11 or mature age students, please apply directly to the Institute for consideration. In some circumstances a bridging program may be required.

How do I apply?

VTAC and direct entry – rolling enrolments
VTAC - to apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.
Direct entry – to apply for both part time and mid-year places in this course, you will need to apply directly to the Institute.

This unit covers the design and development of electronics/computer systems projects. It encompasses working safely, designing, constructing, and recording, evaluating and reporting of an electronics/computer systems design project.
