What does this course involve?

The diploma level units in the course are designed to enhance your supervisory level skills for the chemical and oil refining industries.

The course is designed for those with experience in the industry working at a supervisory or managerial level.
You will learn how to plan plant shutdowns and start-ups, and manage plant operation issues hazard management and the environmental impacts.

The diploma involves integrating plan skills and supervisory skills into a set of skills reflecting the level expected by industry.

You will also develop skills in operating local control systems, learn how to determine energy and mass transfer loads and manage utilities.

You will gain essential teamwork and leadership skills, learn how to promote innovation and change within the workplace, and coordinate customer service strategies.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This leads to work as a process plant operator in the chemical and oil industries. Employment opportunities will have more of a technical and managerial focus than those positions sought after completion of the Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.

What will I study?

To be awarded the Diploma of Process Plant Technology, you must successfully complete the following:

  • all four core units
  • six elective units from Groups A and B and C (including a minimum of two from Group A.  The remaining 4 may be chosen from Groups A, B and C with a maximum of two from Group C.)

Note: where prerequisite units apply, these must be considered in the total number of units chosen.

This competency covers the ability to optimise the process performance of a complete plant area. It includes ensuring that production systems comply with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) requirements, that process, plant and equipment utilisation is planned and carried out, and that problems are solved to fully meet operational needs and ensure that production of finished goods meets customer requirements.
