What does this course involve?

If you are in Year 10, you have the opportunity to participate in this six month traineeship program, working directly for an independent video game development company called Valhalla Studios. Work on the development of their latest games for Apple operating systems, including iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. As an integral part of this paid traineeship, you will attend classes at Box Hill Institute one day a week for 22 weeks, where you will be trained in the use of the 3D modelling and animation software to make exciting video games.

Upon successful completion of the traineeship, you will be awarded a Certificate III in Information Technology. The course is broken down into four key study areas, each delivered to prepare you with the appropriate skills to fulfil your employment obligations while working for Valhalla Studios. These study areas include:

3D Modelling

Learn how to construct 3D models and use Blender 3D software. Introduction to texturing models, setting up lights and cameras, and create rendered snapshots of your work. You will have the opportunity to design, model and texture your own video game character.

3D Animation

Learn the principles of animation, and apply these principles using Blender 3D software. You will prepare your own video game character for animation and establish a series of rendered animation cycles for inclusion in a video game.

PC Fundamentals

Learn how to install operating systems, run diagnostic tests on computer hardware and migrate to new technology. You will learn critical software and hardware skills which allow you to maintain your own PC.

Occupational Health and Safety

Learn to apply OHS procedures in the workplace with an emphasis on working within the IT industries. As part of the program, you will be assessed on your work performance as a Valhalla Studios Trainee. Staff from Box Hill Institute and Valhalla Studios work closely with you to ensure that your experience is fulfilling and you also receive tailored support. All software required to complete the course is open source, meaning it is of an industry standard, but comes at no cost to the user. You will simply download the appropriate version based on your operating system, install it, and then you will be ready to start work.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with entry-level information and communications technology employment opportunities as an administration officer, office worker or junior technician. If you complete the Valhalla Traineeship Program you may pursue further study options in Video Game Design, Advertising, 2D and 3D Animation, Film Making, Industrial Design, Multimedia, Graphic Design, CAD Design and Architectural Design. After completing further study in your area of interest you will be prepared for a role in video games design or a related industry.
