What does this course involve?

This course provides you with the ability to work as a Level III childcare worker in variety of early childhood settings and out-of-school hour's programs. Learn how to care and interact effectively with children, provide food and respond to illnesses and accidents. You will learn how to foster and support the emotional well being of infants and oversee their physical, social and psychological development. You will also learn how to provide administration support in a child care facility, and provide a safe and healthy working environment.

This course is also available to international students.

This course may provide you with employment opportunities in; long day care, occasional care, out of school hour's care, family day care and sessional services, leisure centres, pre-school or kindergartens, neighbourhood houses, Australian migrant education program services and mobile services and other specialised services.

You may be eligible to progress into the Diploma of Children’s Services (Early childhood education and care.

Can I apply?

You may have prior experience or be currently working in the industry and need to upgrade your skills to obtain a qualification. If you are interested in working in this industry and have no previous experience then this course is for you.

You must have:

  • the literacy and numeracy skills required (see 'How do I apply?')
  • a current National Police Record Check
  • a current Working with Children Check.

Direct Entry Download and complete the Box Hill Institute Application Form.All applicants must attend an information evening and complete a free literacy and numeracy test. You are required to attend one of the following sessions:

Length of course

For those not working within the Children's Services industry 4 days a week or part time 2 days a week.
If you are working within the Children's Services industry approximately 4-6 months part time one night per week.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Fees for 2011 are currently being set by the Institute and the Government. Due to the funding changes in the education environment, it is expected that there will be a small rise in fees consistent with CPI. Courses are offered both as self funded courses, or with government subsidised funding. You may be eligible for a government subsidised place, depending on your situation. For further information regarding fees or eligibility for subsidised places, contact the Institute.

Government Subsidised Fees (Skills Building)

Fees for government-subsidised students are made up of three main components:
1.   Tuition Fee
2.   Service and Amenity Fee
3.   Materials Fees (including course teaching materials fee and/or retained course items fees).
1. Tuition Fee - 2010
If you are enrolling for the first time in 2010 and eligible for a government subsidised place, the Tuition Fee will be $1.62 per hour with a minimum Tuition Fee of $120 per year and a maximum of $1,000 per year depending upon number of hours enrolled and eligibility for concession.

If you commenced your current course prior to 1 July 2009, but need to enrol in additional units for the same course in 2010 you will pay the Fee Maintenance rate of $1.40 per hour with a minimum fee of $56 per year and a maximum of $896 per year depending upon eligibility for a concession.
2. Service and Amenities Fee
For enrolments up to 404 hours a $58 fee will be charged. For enrolments 405 hours and higher, an $80 fee will be charged.
3. Material Fees
Course teaching materials fees and/or retained course items fees are charged per course. This fee covers materials used in the course, plus some items that you are issued with and retain beyond the life of the course. Fees will vary from course to course, and can range from $100 to $1,000.

Self Funded

Self funded students will pay approximately $887.76 per year ($1.62 per hour of course) depending upon number of hours enrolled.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Advanced Standing is approved recognition of prior learning that is displayed as an Exemption (EX) on the student’s academic record. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.
