What does this course involve?

This traineeship will show you how to care and support elderly people in low and high care aged facilities.

You will learn how to communicate with clients and provide physical and sociological support along with how to treat people with dementia, provide personal care for clients, and work with culturally diverse clients and co-workers.
You will also learn how to comply with information requirements in aged and community care sectors and apply basic first aid.

This course is delivered with the Certificate III in Home and Community Care to give you a dual qualification on successful completion.

This course may provide you with aged care employment opportunities in local government, community organisations and aged care facilities and private nursing homes.

What further study options will I have?

You will have the opportunity for direct entry into health-related courses such as the Diploma in Nursing (Enrolled Division 2 Nursing), Certificate IV in Disability Work or the Diploma in Leisure and Health and Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistant.

International Students Certificate IV in Disability Work and the Diploma in Leisure and Health are currently not offered to international students.

Can I apply?

Full time applicants must have:

  • a current National Police record check
  • a mature disposition and a genuine interest in the care of older people
  • basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Traineeship applicants must have:

  • previously registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre
  • a training contract with an employer.

Direct entry - at commencement of each term (terms 1-4).

Assessment of application

Length of course

The following options are available:
Fast track intensive - 9 weeks (5 days per week) including work placement. Available terms 2 and 4. 

OR
Extended delivery - 15 weeks (2 days per week) with work placement completed in your own time. Available terms 1 and 3.

Government Subsidised Fees

  1. Tuition Fee - $2.17 per hour *
  2. Concession Tuition Fee - $187.50
  3. Service and Amenities Fee - $65.00 or 90.00

*Annual indicative tuition fee for full-time commencing students, and maximum for continuing students
Fee For Service Fees

Fee for Service - this course will cost $5,000.00 if you aren't eligible for government subsidised training.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Advanced Standing is approved recognition of prior learning that is displayed as an Exemption (EX) on the student’s academic record. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.
