What does this course involve?

The Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing provides comprehensive training in all aspects of veterinary nursing.

You will learn how to provide safe and effective animal care, comply with infection control, assist with surgical and anaesthetic procedures and maintain equipment. You will gain a comprehensive knowledge of workplace safety, general administration, stock control, and veterinary reception as well as to coordinate consulting and theatre routines.

You will also learn how to advise clients about nutrition, animal care, grooming and parasite control products. If you are a veterinary nurse wanting to update your skills you can enroll in individual subjects and complete them on or off-campus.

What employment opportunities will I have?

All applicants must already be employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week as a nurse in veterinary practice. Employment prospects for qualified veterinary nurses in private practice and the animal industry are good.

You may wish to progress into a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing.

Can I apply?

You must:

  • have successfully completed Year 10, or equivalent, although completion of Year 12 is highly recommended
  • have a minimum of 15 hours of paid work per week as a nurse in a veterinary clinic
  • supply evidence of a current tetanus vaccination.

Length of course

On campus students are expected to complete their course in 2 years (on and off-the-job training). Off campus flexible delivery is self-paced. Flexible delivery students typically take 3 years to complete the course.
