What does this course involve?

This course is designed for those already working in, or who are looking for employment in the equine industry.
You will learn how to perform routine horse care and maintenance, prepare horses for competitions and ride horses.

This course will teach you about horse breeding in areas such as mare mating procedures, gestation, birth and care of newborn and young stock. You will also develop skills in office administration, communication and OH&S. You will undertake work placement in an equine training establishment and with a stud during breeding season.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may provide you with employment opportunities such as stable hand or horse breeder in stud farms, training stables, riding schools, retail and administration.

What further study options will I have?

You will be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the Equestrian Federation of Australia NCAS Introductory Horse Management Certificate.
You may also wish to progress into the:

  • Certificate IV in Agriculture (Horse Breeding)
  • EFA NCAS Introductory Instructors Certificate

Can I apply?

You must:

  • be 15 years or over (or mature age)
  • have successfully completed Year 10, or equivalent
  • supply evidence of a current tetanus vaccination

It is also recommended that you have current Ambulance cover.

If you have completed Certificate II Equine Industry (VET in Schools) you are invited to apply for mid-year entry.

Government Subsidised Fees

  1. Tuition Fee - $2.17 per hour *
  2. Concession Tuition Fee - $187.50
  3. Service and Amenities Fee - $65.00 or 90.00

Fee for Service - this course will cost $12,000.00 if you aren't eligible for government subsidised training.

Will my previous experience or study count?

Advanced Standing is approved recognition of prior learning that is displayed as an Exemption (EX) on the student’s academic record. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) takes into account the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained through your previous education and work. This may be through formal or informal training, paid or unpaid work experience, and can earn you credit if relevant to your chosen course.

This competency standard requires a person to safely perform basic horsemanship activities such as riding a horse for the first time and preparing a horse for work using basic methods and procedures.

It requires the application of skills and knowledge to carry out horse handling operations safely and humanely in prepared handling areas, using appropriate equipment and techniques.  Competency requires an awareness of animal welfare legislative requirements and organisation workplace safe practices.  The work in this standard is likely to be carried out under routine supervision within organisation guidelines.

This competency standard covers the functions required to assess conformation of horses.

It requires the application of skills and knowledge to identify desirable and undesirable conformation in horses and to report on conformation using standard conformation terminology. Assessing conformation also includes reporting on the horse unsoundness, blemishes, the way of going and vices. The work in this standard is likely to be carried out as part of a team or independently.
