What does this course involve?

This course is designed to prepare you for a career as an architectural building designer or draftsperson. You will learn about architectural design and the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Applying the principles of environmental sustainability to projects will be an important part of your studies.

By drawing using manual and computer aided drafting you will learn to communicate design ideas and technical construction information in 2D and 3D.

You will gain valuable skills from the design stage through to selection of materials, presentation of the design and management of the project.

This course is also available to international students.

What employment opportunities will I have?

Career opportunities for graduates include working as an architectural technician/draftsperson for architects, building contractors, and building designers or in the building management department of commercial enterprises or government departments. With experience, graduates may work as a building designer in their own right.

Direct and VTAC - Beginning and mid-year entry.

VTAC - to apply for a full time position in this course you must use the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process. Details of the VTAC application process are at www.vtac.edu.au and in the VTAC Guide, which is available from leading newsagents and libraries from August. If the Institute still has vacancies after the VTAC places have been offered, you will be able to apply directly to the Institute.

This unit specifies the outcomes required to undertake complex architectural projects for residential (BCA Classes 1 and 10) and/or commercial (BCA Classes 2 to 9) buildings. It includes consultation with a client to prepare a project brief and the development and presentation of a design concept that meets the requirements of the brief and relevant legislative requirements and codes and standards. It requires the preparation of all necessary documentation and the development of a critical path management diagram. It requires thorough knowledge of the Building Code of Australia (BCA), relevant Australian Standards and local authority regulatory requirements.
All fees quoted are indicative fees and are correct at the time of publishing. In subsequent calendar years, fees may be subject to a small increase in line with annual Institute fee pricing reviews. This qualification may have prerequisites, co-requisite or bridging units from lower or higher level qualifications. An offer of a place is always subject to places being available. The Institute reserves the right to close applications when the course is full. Where minimum course numbers are not met, the course may be cancelled at short notice.
