Subjects

Year 1
BUSS101
Communication
This subject will foster the development of the skills necessary to communicate effectively in the workplace and academic environments. Students will develop their understandings and capabilities in formal oral and written communication, presentation, meetings and interpersonal skills in fashion-industry environments, and will address the requirements of academic writing as a foundation for further studies in the course.
BUSS102
Presentation and marketing
The aim of this subject is to define the major elements of the marketing process and to build an understanding of the role of marketing in the social and economic environment, and as a managerial tool. It will also introduce students to a range of presentation tools used to promote ideas and products in the fashion industry.
DESN101
Design foundation
This subject covers the foundations of design. It ensures students gain visual and conceptual training while learning about the cultural context of fashion through studies of fashion theory. This will allow students to construct an overview of fashion design an form an understanding of the creative process through interaction.
DESN102
Design motivations
Students will further develop their understanding and knowledge of the fashion-design industry. This design subject inducts students into Blumer’s theory of ‘symbolic interaction’ through the process of interaction with a range of ideas, people and situations. It will explore methods of visual communication in order to express students’ personal ‘take’ on differing aspects of fashion.
PROD101
Garment construction fundamentals
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge, understanding and practical skills in production processes. These processes will include garment analysis and evaluation: sourcing of production components and production costing. Students will acquire skills in garment construction, focussing on lower-body garments, and gain essential knowledge about cutting, making, quality control, the specification and labelling for a range of garment types.
PROD102
The making process
Students will focus on the bodice block in the continuation of their investigation into the construction of women’s apparel. Through the construction of experimental samples and toiles, and through market research, students will gain a sound understanding of commercial-garment production techniques. This will then be applied to the design and manufacture of a shirt/bodice design of their choice, alongside an investigation into fashion fabrics and their performance.
TECH101
Pattern making essentials
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge of the technologies of garment making. This knowledge will facilitate the development of insights into, and problem-solving competencies associated with, the interactions between materials of differing properties, design and their effect on pattern and production methods. It will contribute to the formation of a conceptual framework within which decisions are made regarding materials reference to design, pattern, production and end-use criteria. Students will acquire understanding and awareness of the relationship between the flat pattern and the human form and the ways in which various pattern shapes interact in the creation of garments.
TECH102
Pattern making methods
Students will extend and consolidate knowledge and understanding of pattern making used in fashion design and production. They will learn to identify and interpret drawings, develop pattern pieces to transform 2D drawings on 3D garments and acquire insights into the various ways designers have applied their skills. Students will extend their knowledge of constraints that various materials place on pattern construction and draping and expand their understanding and awareness of the relationship between the flat pattern and the human form.
Year 2
BUSS201
Managing production flow
This subject examines differing perspectives on the flow of production and explores the concepts, processes and skills associated with managing workflow, including the analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills required for diagnostic and remedial interventions. Supply chain concepts and project management provide the frameworks for understanding fashion industry specific sectors, activities and processes, including the software used to manage production planning and control. Students will build on their interpersonal skills to enable them to deal with the human resources aspect of workflow management.
BUSS202
Business planning and finance
This subject will introduce students to a range of tools and techniques to enable them to make financial decisions that relate to business in the fashion industry. Students will learn how to apply their understanding of financial management to business planning and will develop the ability to read and construct various types of business documents relevant to working in and around the fashion industry.
DESN201
Style shape and surface
This subject provides an opportunity for students to further explore a range of design concepts from historically and stylistically differing fashion viewpoints, while investigating the segmentation and diversity of the fashion market. The students’ exploration of style, shape and surface the provides the medium through which to express notions of diversity.
DESN202
Bespoke clients and mass production
This subject requires students to generate an original starting point, further developing their analytical and conceptual thinking and individual approach to fashion design. Their personalised starting point will be the basis for a customer/client during this project. They will explore the process of creating a unique ‘capsule collection’ for a client while developing their understanding of tailoring and knitwear. They will further expand their 2D presentation skills through illustration and development of visual promotional material.
PROD201
Personalised garment construction
Students will extend their conceptual understanding of the creation of garments at a professional level while developing advanced skills and knowledge. This is intended to further their capacity to produce garments of greater design complexity. Students will integrate and apply their learning through the construction of a range of garments using machine and hand techniques, through testing and evaluating a range of fabrics, through embellishment of garments and by learning to analyse and develop product-specific criteria for quality control.
PROD202
Manufacturing: manual and machine
This final unit in the production strand will allow students to consolidate and apply a technical and conceptual framework to the control of the whole production process. This will be achieved by the production of a range of apparel that is expressive of a personal style and in accord with the production tenets of high fashion and tailoring. By articulating how their garment ranges address market segment needs, students will extend their understanding of the ‘fashion transformation process model’ and expand their capacity to make objective judgements based on demographic and other market and fashion criteria as it relates to production processes.
TECH201
Pattern making and technology
Students will extend their conceptual framework and gain a greater depth of knowledge and understanding of pattern making procedures and technologies in manual and computer-aided pattern making. Through studying these approaches in tandem students will acquire an understanding of differences in pattern making technologies, their attributes and applications through construction of patterns for a range of complex garment types, and by considering fabric structure in relation to pattern making.
TECH202
Refined pattern making methods
Students will apply accumulated knowledge to integrate and extend concepts, understanding and skills in the selection and application of pattern making technologies. They will acquire a greater depth of knowledge, functions and applications of a variety of pattern making methods. Students will use their understanding, skills and critical judgement in the appropriate selection and use of a variety of CAD and manual pattern making techniques. They will learn to analyse and monitor CAD and manual techniques to ensure quality maintenance for a range of fashion products.
