Training workplaces
At Box Hill Institute we pride ourselves on producing skilled, work-ready graduates who are well equipped to succeed in the industry of their choice.
We strive to provide our students with a truly vocational, hands-on education that is as similar as possible to an actual work environment.
Training workplaces are an integral part of this vocational education. Combining specialist equipment and facilities with contemporary teaching and learning practice, training workplaces simulate or replicate a ‘real-world’ work environment (often involving paying clients) to help develop students’ skills and knowledge, and provide an accurate environment for assessment.
Examples of training workplaces at Box Hill Institute include a veterinary clinic, a restaurant, and the recently opened Health and Wellbeing Hub, which incorporates the Nursing Skills Centre of Excellence (a simulated, modern hospital environment) and the Aveda Institute Melbourne (a training workplace designed and appointed to industry standards, with state-of-the-art facilities comparable to day spas in the world’s finest resorts).
Training workplaces also give teachers an opportunity to experiment with approaches that a standard classroom environment cannot provide. For example, the training restaurant, Fountains, is used to deliver beverage studies and food service. Teachers can move students around so they develop the necessary skills and knowledge – all in an environment that looks and feels like an actual commercial restaurant.
The settings and activities of Box Hill Institute’s training workplaces are as varied as the courses on offer. The Institute divides training workplaces into different categories that explain the purpose and role of operations.
