Industry Services

Training and consultative services through BioSkills and the Biotechnology team.

1.  Do you have a short term project that you are struggling to complete and could use some skilled but inexpensive assistance?

If your answer is yes, then our final year diploma and degree students may be just what you need.

Box Hill Institute has been providing training for the science workforce for over 20 years.

Our Laboratory Technology and Biotechnology degree graduates work in biological, medical, veterinary and plant research, a variety of forensic, pathology and testing environments and the petrochemical and extractive industries.

Our students have a unique combination of solid theoretical knowledge and the hands-on skills that are immediately applicable in many laboratories. These skills include:

      • Basic laboratory skills, such as buffer preparation and accurate pipetting
      • Record keeping
      • Calibration and maintenance of instruments
      • Aseptic techniques
      • Microbiological analysis
      • Gel electrophoresis,
      • PCR and DNA extractions
      • Histology
      • Tissue culture
      • Use of automated equipment.

Our students are also used to working with sophisticated techniques such as HPLC, standard and Real Time PCR, as well as the set-up and running of automated and robotic procedures.

Students who undertake the two-year Diploma in Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology) course and the three-year Biotechnology and Innovation degree spend some of their final year in a real-life workplace. By this stage, they have acquired the knowledge to ensure that they can make a valuable contribution to the workplace but more importantly, they have the practical skills that enable them to be fully functional in a laboratory from day one.

We are always looking for biotechnology companies or organisations that are interested in offering our students work placements or project-based internships as part of their course. This incurs only a symbolic cost for the company; students need to be paid a minimum of $5 per day to ensure insurance cover.

Many past employers have kept on our graduates as new employees.

2.  Are you a small or medium sized biotechnology company looking to future expansion and growth, perhaps with movement into the international biomanufacturing arena but unsure what you need in order to get there?

If your answer is yes, then we are in a unique position to help.

The BioSkills Specialist Centre offers access to a group of consultants who are able to confidentially analyse your business and its aspirations, identify the skills gaps that may be preventing you from the progression you desire and provide expert assistance to bridge these gaps.

We are able to provide advice in virtually any sector of the biotechnology industry; recent consultations have included medical device companies, pharmaceutical companies, pathology laboratories, fibre textile companies, biomanufacturing companies, government and research laboratories.

We are a one-stop shop for all your needs and can readily deliver services related to scientific, regulatory, IP, HR, management, business practice and more. If you are interested in knowing more about our services, please contact us on + 61 3 8892 2067 or email bioskills@boxhill.edu.au.

3.  Do you have a manufacturing or testing project that you would like to undertake but have limited resources, staff and/or facilities to do it?

If your answer is yes, we have both the laboratories and the supervised student labour force that could do this for you as a legitimate part of their training.

BioVolution is the commercial arm of the Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences that undertakes projects like this and ensures that they can meet both the commercial needs of the client and the educational needs of our students. We have expert staff who can work with you to scope out the project, determine time lines, milestones and an accurate budget.
