Cactus needle bokeh

A macro of tiny cactus hairs. My new macro lens is a 4x by Lensmate. To start with, the G7 takes awesome macros, it is perhaps its best attribute. You're not supposed to be able to add lenses to the G7 except a couple special Canon lenses, but with an adapter you can add the Lensmate lenses. Because of the design of the G7, you basically have to have it at full extension (6x) in order for the additional lens to work (the adapter clips the field of vision otherwise), so 4x lens times 6x camera = 24x. I mean 24x magnification is way cool, but geez it's hard to get a focus. The field of focus is very very very miniscule. No pain no gain.

So I got <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/rachelk/478566874">this shot</a>... made a print, and got a little creative!
long ago, my original intention was to hit the tracks in a dress... but rain, and snow have impeded the venture... and today was just too dern cold (and still wet) to attempt that!
I did end up enlisting a photog assistant, a little freaked at the idea of my camera on the tracks, on a tripod, and me on my belly... what if I got distracted and missed a train!?

Single 29 second exposure. Camera was tripod mounted at an angle looking down at me. Used an SB-28 flash Azzu (who else hehe) lent me. Positioned myself, clicked the remote (after butting the camera on 'bulb' mode), clicked the flash button on the SB-28 (which is ridiculously small!what the hell is wrong with you nikon! >:[ ), repositioned myself, clicked the flash again, and then clicked the remote to end the exposure. Took a few attempts as I was in complete darkness. Would have been easier with two exposures blended in photoshop,but hey wheres the fun in that :D
Used my bed sheet and my secret weapon for the backdrop.
Would like to say I'm back as exams are over (for now atleast), but my computers busted =/ So I have to go to Ula's house to edit stuff (woo!).

So... me and the guys decided we wanted to do a pool theme. We wanted to do some fun ones in the studio before we went out to the pool and shot there. We ended up with the idea to do some shots of them "out of the pool" in their towels. So we shot those and then, with my luck, it starts pouring down rain, thundering and lighting. So we never got to do the pool shots, but I think these came out pretty well. I'm still bummed about the pool!

Sailing in the Baltic Sea somewhere south of Karlskrona. The sea here is completely different to the Finnish coastline: there are no islands, and we could easily sail for a few hours without seeing a sight of land, another vessel, or a bird. July 2008.

So today it was back to work. We shot two car commercials had lunch at a Chinese buffet where I said to who I thought was a co-worker and after realizing that it wasn't him... found that what I had said might have come off very creepy and downright scary... but it turned out fine. No need to repeat it.
After that we shot another commercial at our local baseball team (the Montgomery Biscuits) stadium with a couple of radio personalities and our lovable mascot "Big Mo". Fun fun!
Anyway, after reading the last few issues of "the Amazing Spiderman" where he had gotten his uniform stolen and had to borrow one from Daredevil, it made me think of what he might have looked like in his street clothes while watching over the city. So here's your visual. The city is from a shot that I took in Miami a few years ago.

Today we visited to the world famous Butchart Gardens. We've been there many times, but never with Verity at an age where she could run around. This reflecting sphere was one of her favorite things.
This is a 5x HDRi with some editing. I had to pick one Verity since she was in motion for all five shots. I also did tonemapping then Topaz adjust and then further adjustment using levels and curves until I liked what I saw.

(1941) <i>Dumbo</i> premiered in New York City. Unlike the previous films <i>Fantasia</i> and <i>Pinocchio</i>, <i>Dumbo</i> was a bargain, made for a little more than $800,000 and bringing a profit of $850,000. The film won a Best Score Oscar for Frank Churchill and Oliver Wallace, and the lullaby “Baby Mine” was nominated for Best Song.

Istanbul: little girl feeding her grandmother
When this little turkish girl jokingly fed her grandmother in an Istanbul café she was very well aware of being photographed. In fact we had fooled around before with me taking shots and then show her on the monitor. She loved the game and started to laugh and pose. I don't speak Turkish - she was the director as well as the model.

With its (up to) 9X EV bracketing, the D300 makes it easy to do an HDR image. This is my first attempt at a multiple exposure tone map, all my other HDR's up to date have been from a single RAW or jpeg. Yeah, I know, nothing new here with the Dream Lights and Partners, but I don't think I've seen it done in HDR yet. And part of the reason I wanted to do this in HDR is that it's nearly impossible to get this exposure this way with a single file. In fact, it probably is impossible, save some SERIOUS post processing work. So there you have it, Cinderella Castle Dream Lights - 2008, in high dynamic range.

Yeah, right.
And nephrectomies (medical term for removal of kidneys) are surgically done from the front, not the back as commonly told by the legend!
Let me tell you a bathtub full of ice is damn cold! This was a fun and slightly cathartic shot today. I must be a little sadistic. It helped me get out of my nasty mood this weekend.

This is my first ever attempt at panoramic stitching. It is actually three photos stitched together as a very large panoramic image. I used a program called <i>PanoramaStudio</i>. It said it had a free trial, but when saving it left huge watermarks on the image. So I bought it. I can't believe how easy this program makes panoramic stitching. It literally does all the work. I've never seen another software program perform so seamlessly as this. Amazing.

Do you see that gentle shape there in the room with me? It's made up of hundreds of other tiny little things that are perfect and delicate. Each is alive and real. I'll let you zoom into the full-sized version and see if you can deduce their Linnaean taxonomy. (you can zoom in by clicking on the image to go to the Flickr page, then click on All Sizes, then Original -- it works like this for all my shots.... I always put the highest rez version online for you, should you decide it is time to dive in for the full experience)
The restaurant is called the Fleur de Lys, and it's in THE Hotel, attached to the Mandalay Bay. You will probably also see that wine cellar on top with a nice little table for two. I think I need to get back to that place one day... I do love French food.

I think pretty much all kinds of food and drink are welcome. I'll bring a BBQ pit and an ambulance in case there are any problems. And I hope someone brings a boom box. Are they still called that? I don't know. Maybe that means it will be a lame party because I don't even know if they are called boom boxes any more, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that will bring a bit of 80's music.

Beginning the trek to Fitz Roy on the edge of Chile

This is the start of what would be a 40km backpacking trek through the Andes. And I mean THROUGH the Andes.
I have come with my friend Dima, who is ex-Soviet miltiary. He's tough. At 23, he led a 3-week expedition through Siberia to find the rare Siberian Tiger. Now he is 43 and he hasn't slowed down any.
If you look closely at this photo, over on the middle right you can see some very sharp vertical peaks. In there is Fitz Roy, one of the hardest places to reach in the world and even harder to photograph. That is our destination.

Alice in Wonderland: The Carpenter - The Time Has Come...

I decided to do a quick Alice in Wonderland Shoot today, with the Character "The Carpenter" from the InterStory "The Walrus and The Carpenter" told by Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.
"The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.
The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"
The sea was wet as wet could be,
The sands were dry as dry.
You could not see a cloud, because
No cloud was in the sky:
No birds were flying overhead--
There were no birds to fly.
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
"If this were only cleared away,"
They said, "it would be grand!"
"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.
"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each."
The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head--
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.
But four young Oysters hurried up,
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.
Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more--
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.
"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed."
"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Walrus said.
"Do you admire the view?
"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"
"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"
"I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one."

Daily Disney - Hollywood Studios Balloons at Dusk (Explored)

Well guys, I'm back from a 5 day trip to Walt Disney World. Although I took my camera with me, with the 50mm f/1.4 mounted on it at all times, I didn't really get all that many photo opportunities. It was a family trip and we were touring with another family that had never been to Disney World, so just not a ton of time for pictures. All in all, I brought home 803 RAW files. Probably only 1/3 of those are keepers and probably only a 1/3 of the keepers are pictures I'd post on Flickr. So that equals out to be around 87 pictures - hopefully enough to post one a day until our October trip. I feel like I really got to know my camera this trip and I played around with exposure compensation a lot and using only the 50mm really made me think about composition. I used the tilted composition a lot because everyone seems to be doing that these days, and also because sometimes I just seemed to close so sometimes by tilting the camera you can get more in the frame. I did get one night at the studios when everyone else went back to the hotel so I did pretty good there. There were so many times that I wish I had my tripod and a wider lens though. We stayed at Pop Century so I got a few decent pics there also.
All in all it was a fun trip... some highs and lows:
<b>Highs:</b>
-Like I said before, I got to know my camera pretty well.
-Discovered that the 50mm f/1.4 is an AWESOME lens for dark rides.
-We were able to do pretty much everything we wanted to do.
-Had a fun day at Cocoa Beach and heard (to cloudy to see) the space shuttle go off.
-Olivia rode all the attractions including Tower of Terror, Rock N Roller Coaster and Expedition Everest - and loved them all!
-Met up with my brother and his family for a day at the Magic Kingdom.
<b>Lows:</b>
-Man was it hot!
-Holy smokes it was crowded

Made from 8 handheld HDR shots, a total of 24 raw photos at -2, 0, +2.
The original 16-bit tiff took half an hour to stitch together then 5 minutes just to save!

"I Will Break Your Fucking Camera"

A couple of days ago, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/norcalnerd/">Stuart</a> and I decided to walk through the Financial District for lunch.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnamartinsf/4029401847/">I had heard</a> that the security guards at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/555_California_Street" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">555 California</a> were unappreciative of photography. I mentioned this to Stuart and we agreed that these types of rules were silly and served no real purpose.
So we decided to check it out and within a few moments <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/troyholden/4036087411/" target="_blank">several security guards greeted us</a> with wagging fingers and walkie-talkies.
No photography, they stated clearly. Why, we responded. Safety, they said.
I decided to challenge this statement and the older of the bunch (left) asked me if I wanted to be punched in the face. No, I replied, I have to go back to work and a black eye would make things awkward for me. He then asked me how I would feel if he broke my camera. I told him I would be bummed, but that I needed an upgrade and if he touched me or my camera I would seek monetary legal action to the extent of a brand new Canon 5D Mark II.
Shortly after, my internal voice of reason set in and I decided to leave. The conversation was going no where and a definition of "safety" was unable to be produced.
I wonder what the fear is all about? There are currently <a href="http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=555+california&m=text">1096 images</a> of 555 California on Flickr, and not one of them indicates a compromise of security. It just doesn't make any sense.
<strong>UPDATE:</strong> I received an email from Fatima Vegas who works on the security team for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vornado_Realty_Trust" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Vornado Reality</a>, who manages the property:
<em>"Thank you for your e-mail. I just received information from the incident within the past hour. I am investigating the matter. This is not typical of our security team at 555 California St. If our investigation results in the officer behaving in an unprofessional manner, he will be disciplined accordingly. We do not tolerate that sort of behavior from any of our service providers."</em>
<strong>UPDATE #2: </strong>I was put in touch with the <a href="http://www.aclunc.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ACLU</a> via my friend <a href="http://thomashawk.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Thomas Hawk</a> yesterday afternoon. Each one clarified a couple of things about "Private Property" such as the plaza in front of this building:
The plaza where the photography was taking place in was a *public* area on private property. <a href="http://www.rebargroup.org/projects/commonspace/index2.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">These areas</a> are treated differently than other a citizen's private property (such as your home). In order to prevent a public easement of the property and losing their private property distinction, property owners will install little plaques denoting the area as giving the public a right to pass under <a href="http://law.justia.com/california/codes/civ/1006-1009.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">California Civil Code 1009</a> typically. While this notification preserves their ultimate property right, it also reduces the control that they have over that area.
Specifically, the code states: <em>“After taking any of the actions set forth in paragraph (1), (2), or (3), and during the time such action is effective, the owner shall not prevent any public use which is appropriate under the permission granted pursuant to such paragraphs by physical obstruction, notice, or otherwise.”</em> Restricting photography from the plaza in front of 555 California violates the public use clause in California Civil Code 1009.
In any event, even if this is not a <a href="http://sanfrancisco.about.com/b/2007/04/13/privately-owned-public-open-space.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Privately Owned Public Space</a>, nothing in California law makes it a crime for a person to be on non-residential property that is open to the public unless one is interfering with the owner’s business activities, and taking a photo is not.

I know Trey did it better, much better! Others did too, but this is why everybody is doing it. If you ever stood at the peak you will never foregt this moment. It's majestic, kind of sacred :D
Srry for getting poetic but Honk Kong in my mind has the most impressive Skyline ever seen. Too bad when I was there clouds have been all over the place even though I waited for 5 hours to get a clear view. Sometimes life is unfair!
The Post processing was done from a single Raw file. Photomatix -> Photoshop -> some magic and the Nik Color Efex for the dark tones and the saturated reds.

The Random Travelers' Society went on a little boating trip in the middle of absolutely nowhere. An icy lagoon in Eastern Greenland. It's fascinating how still the waters are in the Arctic Sea -- the icebergs have wonderful blue hues, there's no animals (we only saw one seal, one whale and a couple of gulls during the half-day trip). August 2008.

I had a go at some custom bokeh last night with some interesting results! Here two of the simple shapes we made a heart and a xmas tree. I'll will be adding some more interesting ones after the weekend =]
Really good fun and well worth a night in.
All you need is a fast lens (Canon 50mm prime works great), duct tape, a knife, fairy lights, card and your good =]

I’ve always had an affinity for black and white photography. There’s just something about it that I love, I can’t really put a finger on it. Maybe it’s the simplicity without all the busy colors or maybe it’s the fact that it really kind of forces you to use your imagination since color is completely out of the equation. Whatever it is, I know that I really like it. Although I’ve “published” some black and white work in the past on Flickr and other places – with Disney photos – the fact that A) Disney is so darn colorful, and B) the D300 makes such great color images, I’ve never had the nerve to really get into black and white. I’m starting this series really as kind of an experiment. If I’m pleased with the output the idea is to eventually create a coffee table book with all the “Wonderful World of Color - In Black & White” series photos.
So, I hope you all enjoy viewing these images as much as I do making them!

<i>With my last lightning upload, many commented on my speed and reaction time. It's a lot easier than that and I hope you can grab a few like this one after reading below. </i>
<b>DSLR</b>
Tripod, Cable/remote shutter release.
turn Auto Focus OFF (manual focus on horizon)
Set camera shutter speed to BULB
ISO 200 to start, adjust if needed.
F/8. to start, adjust if needed.
Take a shot for 15 seconds by holding the shutter release button, and look at the surrounding light in your results. (**You do not want it to bright.**)
Take a shot, nothing happens, no lightning, take another shot.
During the 15 seconds if lightning strikes, you'll have it.
<b>Alternative settings.</b>
Point and shoot cams.
Use the Manual setting and set the shutter speed to 10-15 seconds.
Use the self timer (3sec) to trigger the shot, because keeping the tripod steady is a key factor. (I barely move or breath during shots)
Time is the priority here, so adjustments can be made with Aperture or ISO to darken or lighten the scene.
The reason for a bit of Aperture is to not have the lightning flash burn the image out.
Like fishing for lightning, chill in a lawn chair and grab what you can get.

It has been some time since I posted a new dewdrop. Hope you like it. Shot this morning at seven am as I was waking and thinking about politics. I became distracted by the scattered light on the lawn. The flower is a bluebell. very small, perhaps 10mm in diameter.
Dewdrops are very tiny. Average cameras will not capture this well. Look for a camera with a good macro function if you are using point and shoot. In DSLR get a macro lens.
This is cropped from an unaided Canon G10 Macro mode RAW shot. Love this camera.

Dewdrops are lenses. the image you see is not a reflection. It is light passing through the water drop. The waterdrop is a lens. This is a "refraction" have fun.

The Olympic Cauldron lit by The Great One (aka TGO), Wayne Gretzky, sits on the Vancouver waterfront facing the North Shore mountains where a lot of the amazing Winter Olympic sports are being staged.
The weather has been a little warm this year. Quite the opposite of last year when Vancouver was buried in snow by what we referred to as "snowmageddon". I guarantee you folks, It is a lot more fun this year. Vancouver has two snowplows and one is broken. Just kidding Mayor Gregor ;-)

Hey everybody. It is getting spring even if in Germany the weather is baaaa-a-a-a-a-a-d that I could cry. But in Japan Sakura is coming the weeks to follow. At this time the Cherry Blossoms all over Japan begin to bloom.
Believe me, it is beautiful and it touches my heart every time I see a photo of it. In these white Cherry Blossoms there is so much peace I really don’t know how to explain it. For me they just symbolize quietness, peace, rest and security. So good God created them as beautiful as they are.
In Germany we say “Ist das mit Perwoll gewaschen?” if something is really clean. I always imagine a huge washing machine cleaning all these blossoms. But baahh I don’t want to bother you with my fairy tales. I can tell these to my kids and grandkids later in life :)
I hope you like the photo as much as I do and get inspired to dream about how beautiful nature is.
If you are like me than you have things to do all of your time… But I want to encourage you today, take 5 minutes, or if you have no time at all, just looks at the little amenities you can find outside of the internet and your computer. This will surely make your day easier!

Camera Rig (just getting started...haha)

<b>Update:</b> This photo was taken a while back and the amount of camera gear I have has grown by leaps and bounds (<i>not sure yet if this is a good or bad thing</i>). You can see the new gear photo by <b><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fensterbme/2152333137/">going here</a></b>.
<b>Original Desc:</b> Well here it is, my camera gear...all indivudally noted and all strewn out for the world to see. 90% of it was bought in the last 10 months. It all fits in the camera bags at the top and the bags are normally packed to the brim with the gear.
My <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/fensterj">wife</a> is a very patient and kind soul but I think I'm at the limit for a good long while, when I was arranging this stuff on the bed to take photo of it in our guest room she just about snapped seeing everything laying there. If I buy much else I will probably be justifiably shot, so if I stop suddenly posting to Flickr you'll know I likely got a new piece of gear and was subsequently killed.

In photography I've found something that I really, really enjoy and is a way I can have a semi-creative outlet for my soul. We really had a lot of fun in that trip.
You see just our "before sleeping" time, after a whole day of activity, started from 3:30am!
We had <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/380627445">a long travel</a> from <a href="http://www.flickr.com/map/?&order_by=interestingness&fLat=35.722524&fLon=51.412582&zl=7&map_type=hyb">Tehran</a> to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/map/?&order_by=interestingness&fLat=33.983041&fLon=51.447429&zl=5&map_type=hyb">Kashan</a>, and then to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/map/?&order_by=interestingness&fLat=34.260137&fLon=51.751098&zl=7&map_type=hyb">Maranjab</a> (about 320km - <i>3 links are 3 flickr maps</i>); Then we were in a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hamed/324769582/">salt lake</a>, in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hamed/327939900/">sand dunes</a>, in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/447173694/">an ancient caravansary</a>, in a camel farm, in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/400337550/">some desert jungle</a>, and some other interesting places inside desert that day, and in night time, after we found that we got lost in desert, two shepherds found us, and invited us to their humble house, which is the room you can see in this shot.
Yes, we seem to be very tired, but we were really enjoyed that day.
You can ask all attendants. Everyone whom I asked this question, answered that "it was his/her best trip all over his/her life"...!
Yes, it looks uncomfortable here. Too small, not so clean, no place for lie down. But this was their best!
Our hosts were two poor shepherds, and this room was their house. I don't think that any of us could forget their kind hospitality. They didn't have anything, but they brought us and gifted us all their "any things"...
They shared their food with us. One of them <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/519532767/">played a hand made instrument</a> and sanged an Afghan song for us. They brought us <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/519521825/">thier super young</a> (1 or 2 days old) gouties <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/519517137/">just for play</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellyphotos/517234109/">to be happy with</a>.

In Islam, after one month of fasting each day from sunrise to sunset, Eid-ul-Fitr - the first day of next month - is forbidden for fasting, and all Muslims celebrate it with sweeties, cookies fruit juices and other halal drinks.

<b>Eid ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر, Persian: عید فطر)</b>, often abbreviated as simply Eid, sometimes spelled Eid al-Fitr, is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Fitr means "to break the fast" and therefore symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. On the day of the celebration, a typical Muslim family gets up very early and attends special prayers held only for the occasion in mosques, in large open areas, stadiums or arenas. The prayer is generally short, and is followed by a khutba. The festivities and merriment start after the prayers with visits to the homes of friends and relatives and thanking God for all blessings. Eid is a time to come together as a community and to renew friendship and family ties. This is a time for peace for all Muslims in the world to devote to prayers and mutual well-being.
It is a joyous occasion with important religious significance. Happiness is observed as attaining spiritual uplift after a month of fasting. Muslims dress in holiday attire. After attending the special congregational prayer in the morning, worshippers greet and embrace each other in a spirit of peace, love, and brotherhood. Visiting friends and relatives is common.
For Muslims, Eid ul-Fitr is a joyful celebration of the achievement of enhanced piety. It is a day of forgiveness, moral victory and peace, of congregation, fellowship, brotherhood and unity. Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking God for the help and strength that they believe He gave them throughout the previous month to help them practice self-control.
<b>History</b>
The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad with his companions and relatives over the completion a month of fasting.
<b>Timing</b>
The holiday follows the month of Ramadan, falling on the first day of Shawwal (the tenth month in the Islamic calendar). As with all months in the Islamic calendar, it begins with the sighting of the new moon, although some people choose to use scientific calculations instead of a confirmed visual sighting.
Because the day depends on the sighting of the moon, the sighting could only be possible just before the sunset. Most check with local mosques or other members of the community to see if the moon has been sighted by authoritative parties. In Malaysia, they are using both sighting of the moon and astronomical calculation to verify the date. But the calculation is only used to verify the sighting of the moon (i.e. the exact time of the visibilty of the moon). For this reason there may be regional differences in the exact date of Eid, with some Muslims fasting for 29 days and some for 30 days.
Eid ul-Fitr commemorates the end of the month of Ramadan. Fasting is forbidden on this day as it marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. A Muslim is encouraged to rise early and partake of a light snack such as dates before then attending morning prayers with family members in the local community mosque.
<b>Traditions and practices</b>
Common greetings during this three-day festival are the Arabic greeting "Eid mubarak" or "Eid saeed" which, loosely translated, mean "Happy Eid!". In addition, many countries have their own greetings based on local language and traditions.
Muslims are encouraged to dress in their best clothes, new if possible, and to attend a special Eid prayer that is performed in congregation at mosques or open areas like fields, squares etc. When Muslims finish their fast at the last day (29th or 30th Ramadan), they congregate to recite Takbir:

The Takbir is recited after confirmation that the moon of Shawwal is sighted on the eve of the last day of Ramadan. It continues until the start of the Eid prayer. Before the Eid prayer begins every Muslim (man, women or child) must pay Zakat al Fitr, an alms for the month of Ramadan. This equates to about 2 kg of a basic foodstuff (wheat, barley, dates, raisins, etc.), or its cash equivalent, and is typically collected at the mosque. This is distributed to needy local Muslims prior to the start of the Eid prayer. It can be given anytime during the month of Ramadan and is often given early, so the recipient can utilise it for Eid purchases. This is distinct from Zakat based on their wealth, which must be paid to a worthy charity.
The Eid prayer (salah) is followed by the khutba (sermon) and then a prayer (dua') asking for forgiveness, mercy and help for the plight of Muslims across the world. It is then customary to embrace the persons sitting on either side of you as well as your relatives, friends and acquaintances.
Muslims spend the day thanking the Creator for all their blessings, as well as just having fun and enjoying themselves. Children are normally given gifts or money. Women (particularly relations) are normally given special gifts by their loved ones. Eid is also the time for reconciliations. Feuds or disputes, especially between family members, are often settled on Eid.

<b>Eid -e- Fetr in Iran</b>
In the predominantly Shia culture of Iran, Eid is a highly personal event, and celebrations are often more muted. Called Eideh Fitr by most Iraninans, charity is important on that day. Typically, each Muslim family gives food to those in need. Often meat or ghorbani, which is an expensive food item in Iran, will be given by those in wealthier families to those who have less. Payment of fitra is obligatory for each Muslim. The tradition in many families holds that for each member of your household on the day of Eid, one person outside of your family needs to be fed. Many Iranian families have chelo kabab, which is skewered meat served with white rice, grilled tomatoes, herbs and yogurt on that day. Thanking God for all blessings is top on the list of activities for the day. The day is a national holiday. So most people spend the day at home or visiting family or going for outings in the areas around the big cities.
<b>Eid ul-Fitr in the United States and Canada</b>
Typically, the end of Ramadan is announced via e-mail, postings on websites, or chain phone calls to all members of a Muslim community. Working persons usually attempt to make arrangements for a lighter work day on the days that may possibly be the Eid day, but many North American Muslims are often noted to not be able to take the entire day off.
Typically, a Muslim family in the United States or Canada will wake up very early in the morning and have a small breakfast. Next the family will go to the nearest congregational prayer group to pray. The prayer may be held at the local mosque, a hotel ballroom, local arena or stadium. Often these prayers are held in shifts; for example, the first prayer would at 7 am, the second at 9 am, and the third at 11 am. After prayers, the family members disperse to school or work accordingly, or head home to prepare celebrations if they managed to get the day off. Depending on the nation, Muslims in North America tend to celebrate different traditions, yet most of these are based off of similar customs which are simply followed out differently in each individual country.
Since every family has a different work related situation, some Muslims may attempt to take the entire day off to spend it as a family. A few other families may have to ask for a partial day off, or in many cases, not take the work day off at all due to the importance of their job in terms of the family's fianancial situation or in terms of importance to the company itself, though this does not generally occur due to being denied the time off work as this goes against religious freedom laws in both nations. Because North American Muslims come from all parts of the world, one particular type of food cannot be identified as served on this day. Many Muslim North American families visit the homes of others to congregate on a day of celebration.

Jérémie became candidate to join the fun.
My friend <a href="http://flickr.com/eole/tags/kena">Kena</a> took the picture, but for the settings, we had:
- a tripod ;
- a wired remote ;
- a master flash (Speedlite 520EX II) attached to the camerat , that strobes very low (-3) ;
- a slave flash (Speedlite 430EX) put on the ground that allows to display relief on the subjects.

Chris & Jessica Engagement - Falling

This was the first engagement shoot that I have done and I was excited that I got to do it with two of my long-time friends: Chris and Jessica. They're really cool people. Chris popped the question earlier in the summer and they called me right away to ask if I would go up to Oregon City to do some engagement shoots for them. They also wanted me to do their wedding, but I told them I wanted to enjoy the wedding, not have to photograph it. I think Jessica believes she can still find a way to convince me to do it.
Half the shoot was done at Hillendale Park, which is where he proposed (and right near the house where I spent 18 years of my life). The other half was in the backyard of Chris' parent's house. They were great to shoot with and the weather was awesome. I must confess, I did browse flickr for a while on poses I could use, so not all of these poses are my own making.
<b>How to recreate this photo:</b>
I'm a huge fan of sharing and creative commons. I also wanted to share how this photo was created.
1) Find a place with a still background. Wind moving bushes can make this hard.
2) Put your camera on a tripod.
3) Place your subjects at the edge of your frame.
4) Have one subject take decently sizes steps. Have them pause as they complete each step. Take a photo as they pause. Have them take another until they get to the middle.
5) Now repeat for the other subject until they are in the middle.
6) Have them kiss or do something fun in the middle and take a photo of that. You can try a few different poses her and decide which one you want to use later.
<b>7) Bring all these photos into one photoshop document. Keep one photo as background. Keep each different "copy" of the person on a different layer
8) On each layer that is not serving as the background to the image, erase everything except the person. Make sure you don't erase shadows. They are important as well.
9) Change the opacity of the layers that aren't the ends or the middle 50%. They will blend into the background.</b>
