Whitehorse Schools Alliance
Principles of government secondary schools in the city of Whitehorse developed the Whitehorse Schools Pathways Alliance in 2008. Although the key focus is to develop a proposal for a Trade Training Centre under the Federal Government’s initiative to increase the number of students achieving Year 12 or equivalent, the alliance has delivered other opportunities for collaboration and information sharing.
The alliance meets regularly and now includes Box Hill Institute, some independent and Catholic secondary schools, the Gateway Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN), Eastern Industry and Education Partnerships and The City of Whitehorse.
Discussions are underway to submit a proposal in June 2010 for a purpose-built Trade Training Centre at the Institute on the Victoria Crescent (Elgar Campus) site, which would include programs in areas including trade “tasters”, VET in Schools (Certificate II and III), green energy/suitability and specialist programs for high-achieving students. In this model, secondary school students from the alliance would access the new facility and be taught and assessed by industry qualified BHI trainers using industry standard equipment.
