John reports directly to the CEO, John Maddock and is part of the CEO’s Senate Group along with the Deputy CEO and four other Senior Managers.

The General Manager Property and Campus Services, the Executive Manager of Strategic Projects, the Centre Manager for Information Technology Services and the Curriculum Maintenance Manager, Engineering Industries all report to John on operational and strategic matters.

Currently the areas of Major New Infrastructure, Property and Campus Services and Information Systems report to John, either directly or through the responsible General Manager. John's areas of responsibility also include the development of commercial activities in the ICT Industry, establishing new relationships with icon industries and leveraging these relationships into maintaining BHI at the leading edge in ICT to support teaching and corporate functions.

In the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO) John chair’s the Institute’s Information Systems Committee which is made up of the key business owners of the major Information Systems. These include Finance, Human Resources, Student Management, BHI WEB Site, Intranet and other key systems used to support our students. Other strategic committees that John is part of are  the CEO Senate, Remuneration Committee and the Risk Management Committee.

The key drivers of these teams are to expand profitable commercial activities, with appropriate risk management controls, that contribute operating income and surplus capital to reinvest in Box Hill Institute. These teams are also responsible for developing relationships with industry, both locally and internationally, that can lead to further commercial opportunities for teaching centres.

One of John's key external activities is the leadership role of the Curriculum Maintenance Manager for the Engineering Industries Cluster which includes Electrical, Electronics, and Automotive and Engineering industries. This role is advisory to Skills Victoria and requires that John represents the State of Victoria at national forums and oversees curriculum development and maintenance in these fields. The CMM has annual targets set by Skills Victoria and has KPIs set by Skills Victoria that are reported on directly to Skills Victoria.

Professional Background

John Italiano was appointed to Box Hill Institute as a teacher in Electronics on the 1st of January 1980.

John's background is in Electronics and Computing and 33 years in Education and TAFE. He moved from industry-based roles to teaching Mathematics and Science, including Physics in Technical Schools. He came to Box Hill Institute to teach in the Electronics Engineering Department (now Centre for Information and Communications Technology). In a short period John moved into curriculum areas as an examiner and then writing curriculum on a national basis.

John has represented Victoria in driving some of the national training agendas in the electronics area while Box Hill Institute was the designated provider for curriculum matters. As the Centre Manager in Electronics Engineering, he worked on developing the commercial activities of the Centre and eventually undertook international projects in Malaysia, Singapore, China and Vietnam.

As John’s experiences grew, he took on more management roles including the Management of the Centre for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and was promoted to General Manager for the Division of Electronics Technology. During this period, he developed relationships liaising with leading ICT industry companies and national bodies in the curriculum arena. Such relationship helped John to develop the successful Cisco Systems Networking Academy partnership, Apple Accredited Training and leadership in the Microsoft IT Academy development in Australia.
