Areas of Responsibility

John has been Box Hill Institute’s Chief Executive Officer since early December 1999. He was formerly director of Gordon Institute of TAFE from January 1996 until December 1999.

 

He is responsible for educational leadership within the Institute. This includes strategic positioning and promotion of the Institute within government, industry and the community as well as strategic planning and development. He is also accountable for the Institute’s business growth, management and financial performance and is the Managing Director of Box Hill Enterprises.

 

Professional Background

John has wide experience in vocational education and training (VET) across areas of responsibility such as a strategic and business planning; business development; marketing and public relations; information services; international education; VET program delivery; development of flexible delivery modes; entrepreneurial and commercial activities; VET research; quality and customer service initiatives; and financial management.

 

His previous roles include:

CEO at the Gordon for 4 years from January 1996 to December 1999

  • Five years as Deputy Director at Box Hill Institute of TAFE [Jan ’90 – Dec 95] responsible for both the strategic planning and operations of the commercial business development for the Institute including its international operations

  • Ten years prior to that, held a variety of management roles at Moorabbin Institute of TAFE

  • Four years in secondary teaching at Glenroy Technical School

  • Before entering his career in education, John was employed by one of the big six accounting firms, Arthur Andersen & Co., working in their small business management and business consultancy areas

  • Chair of the Victorian Government State Training System Industry Training Development Program; a State-wide strategic initiative to assist TAFE colleges to become commercially viable in the provision of services to industry and so generate self-funding income

Internationally John has been Chair of the Global Education Network since July 2008 and is a current member (and Past Chair) of the Executive Committee (Board) of Postsecondary International Network; An Alliance of Postsecondary Institutions Dedicated to the Furtherance of International Education and Understanding through A Sharing of Experience. He is also appointed by the Singapore Minister of Education as a member of the External Review Panel (ERP) of the ITE Quality Assurance Framework (IQAF).

 

John is also a member of the Board Member of Basketball Australia and Chairs Basketball Australia High Performance Commission which has responsibility for our twelve national teams and the pathways leading up to them.

 

John is Australia’s delegate to the FIBA, the world governing body for the sport of basketball plus he in on the Board of FIBA Oceania Basketball and is a member of FIBA’s International Competition Commission.

 

John commenced his playing career with one of Australia’s leading national league clubs; the Melbourne Tiger’s in their junior program and represented that club for a period from 1965 through to 1980 in State and National championships at both junior and senior level.

 

During that period he was also selected to represent Australia at the National Titles at the international level and was a regular member of the Australian squad during the 1970’s. 

 

John attended one Olympics and six World Championships. Two of them, as a player and four as Head of Delegation including receiving a Gold Medal at the Brazil World Championships as Head of Delegation for the Opals achievement. He was also a Board member of the organising body for the World Championship for 22 and Under Men, held in Victoria in 1997 at which Australia won a gold medal.

 

He will also be Head of Delegation at both the Men’s World and Women’s World Championships in August and September this year making it eight world championships/Olympics he will have attended either as a player or administrator representing Australia.

 

John has been awarded Life Membership of Basketball Victoria and also awarded a Prime Minister’s medal for volunteer services associated with the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
