About our centre
Box Hill Institute’s Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences is a provider of accredited and short course training programs that provide the skills for our graduates to obtain jobs in a wide range of animal and science-based industries.
The Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences focuses on biotechnology training and is home to BioSkills, the Specialist Centre in Biotechnology Training.
Graduates are uniquely equipped to forge careers in industries including:
- animal technology
- biotechnology
- companion animal services
- horse studies
- industrial sciences
- laboratory technology
- veterinary nursing
- zoo keeping.
We also offer a well-regarded Bridging to Science course for adults returning to study and wanting to pursue further higher education in the science field.

We tailor our course material to meet the stated needs of industry. This commitment to ‘getting it right’ for industry ensures our graduates are work ready and have the best chance of obtaining employment.
We provide opportunities for our students to undertake industry-based work placement as part of their course and our teachers work closely with employer and employee representatives to ensure that students are a good fit for the industries into which they are placed.
Often the work placement helps the student show their skills to a prospective employer. Many students find employment in the companies in which they undertake work placement.
Our facilities
The Centre for Biotechnology and Animal Sciences has extensive state-of-the-art laboratories featuring the latest industry standard equipment.
The centre also features a fully equipped veterinary clinic (Pets on Elgar), dog grooming facilities and an animal facility that houses laboratory animals as well as reptiles and amphibians.
These resources mean our students can learn in a real environment, developing practical skills under supervision.
