Student Testimonials – Sally-Ann Johns

“At school (Box Hill Institute), we get to do a wide range of floristry items and different techniques and all sorts of things you’d never get asked to make at work.”

Sally-Ann Johns has come a long way since doing work experience at a florist in high school.

She enjoyed it so much that she decided to make it a career.

Her first steps towards completing the Certificate III in Floristry apprenticeship have already netted her a nomination in the Outstanding Student of the Year – Second Year Apprentice Awards.

Whilst completing her floristry studies, Sally-Ann has already worked in three different florists by choice.

This diverse experience has been invaluable.

“Because I have worked in so many different areas, I have been exposed to a variety of styles and tastes — each community has had different demands,” she said.

“It has also been pretty good just to see how different businesses work and that will help me if I decide to start my own business.”

She said her course at Box Hill Institute gave her the opportunity to try her hand at a wide range of floral designs.

“At school, we get to do a wide range of floristry items and different techniques and all sorts of things you’d never get asked to make at work,” she said.

“It gives you ideas of what you can do and you can go back to work and show your customers what else is available.”

Sally-Ann said successful floristry now depended on striking a balance between offering customers traditionally styled flowers and contemporary designs.

“I like to go for more of the modern styles but you still need to design items that people want to buy,” she said.

“However you can give your customers more ideas about what they can do in their own home rather than just a few gerberas in a vase.”
