“I love it. It’s definitely the right thing for me. I knew in the first week of being here (at the Baker's Delight Centre for Excellence)."
Kerri-Anne Sheedy loves working in the bakery — a passion which has led to her nomination for Outstanding Student of the Year – First Year Apprentice.
Despite frequently starting work at 2am at Bakers Delight in Canterbury, Kerri-Anne said the bakery industry was where she belonged.
She is now completing the Certificate III Food Processing (Retail Baking – Bread) through Box Hill Institute’s Bakers Delight Centre of Excellence in Bakery Training.
The Centre for Excellence trains about 100 bakery apprentices at a time and Kerri-Anne was named Apprentice of the Year in 2004.
Kerri-Anne said training at the Institute had helped her sharpen up her skills in food preparation and processing.
“They teach you little bits and pieces that can really help you make a product that’s of a much higher standard,” she said.
“I’ve also learnt about the technical side as in the types of different ingredients and what happens when they mix together.
She said the skills she’d learned had also increased her speed and helped her work more efficiently in the bakery.
She said she had loved food preparation ever since she was in high school.
“I love it. It’s definitely the right thing for me. I knew in the first week of being here (at the Baker's Delight Centre for Excellence)."
Kerri-Anne’s next goal is to become a production manager then a bakery manager or owner.
