Student Testimonial – Karla Hillam

“I loved it. Not only did I learn a lot about being a good artist but also about being business-minded and how to network myself."

Music degree graduate Karla Hillam said she received a fantastic well-rounded music education at Box Hill Institute.

“I loved it. Not only did I learn a lot about being a good artist but also about being business-minded and how to network myself,” she said.

“I’m a professional voice student and I got a lot of great experience performing in cabaret and Broadway musicals. I learned about how songs are used to tell a story as well as learning about harmony and rhythm.”

Karla took part in concerts such as Box Hill Institute’s Spring Spectacular and a fundraising cabaret evening.

Most recently, she scored a place as a principal dancer in the Australian version of the Broadway musical Rent and was also understudy for the role of Mimi, one of the main characters.

Karla praised the caliber of the Institute’s teachers.

“The great thing is that the lecturers there are very much involved in the music industry as opposed to teachers that just teach music,” she said.

“Also, they have great facilities and they are just going to get better and better. I’m disappointed I’m leaving now because they have plans to extend.”

Karla came to Box Hill Institute on the recommendation of the Victorian College of the Arts after she had completed their foundation music improvisation course.

“I’ve always wanted to do performing arts, it’s my passion,” she said.

Karla has big hopes for her future music career.

“I would really love to move overseas and get into music theatre in London or the United States,” she said.
