Student Testimonial – Julie Maclean

“I’ve loved the course so much already and I’ve only been here for five minutes.”

It took English-born, Box Hill Institute writing student Julie Maclean a long time to get her head and tongue around typical Australian language when she first moved to country Victoria.

On 1 March, the Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) student had the chance to air those feelings on ABC Rural radio’s ‘Bush Telegraph’ segment.

Julie’s piece A Broad in the Bush, was a satirical look at typical Australian terminologies and placenames from a foreigner’s point of view.

“I first came to Australia in 1976 for a holiday and ended up staying,” she said. “I moved straight from England to Gippsland and was faced with all these unusual aboriginal town names.”

Julie had the opportunity to have her story recorded for the radio program after joining the Victorian Writer’s Centre.

Julie said she started the diploma in February and was delighted to have already had her work recognised.

“I’ve loved the course so much already and I’ve only been here for five minutes,” she said.

Julie said writing teacher Nadine Cresswell-Myatt had been a tremendous support.

“I’d only met her once in person at the time my work went to air but she has been in constant contact,” she said.

“Her advice is so useful … she’s made me much more disciplined and given me such great feedback.”

Julie said it was Nadine’s encouragement that has seen her submit other stories to various publications.
