Student Testimonial – Daniel McConville

"I’d heard that the Institute’s disability unit was the best in Victoria ... they totally supported me."

Box Hill Institute Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering graduate Daniel McConville was the perfect candidate for the Terry O’Banion Student Technology Awards.

"I was just so surprised," he said. "I couldn’t understand why it was me but then I felt so pleased and proud."

Sponsored by Microsoft and the League for Innovation, the award is given to students who demonstrated strong talents in computer technology and a need for financial assistance in achieving their career goals.

Daniel is now fulfilling his career goals by working full time with AAPT.

At just 19 years of age, Daniel suffered a major blow when a life-changing accident left him legally blind.

Daniel was afraid his dreams of working in a computer-related career were out of reach.

He believed his family’s strength and courage helped regain his confidence.

Daniel decided to study at Box Hill Institute as it appeared to be very practical.

"Initially I was really interested in Cisco and Box Hill Institute was the biggest and best training centre," Daniel said.

The Institute’s willingness to support Daniel with his disability was the determining factor in his final decision.

"I’d heard that the Institute’s disability unit was the best in Victoria," he said. "They totally supported me."

Daniel said the Institute often went beyond the call of duty to help him.

"They arranged everything for me … they always gave me way more than I needed. The teachers were fantastic."
