Student Testimonial – Carlene Stewart

“I’m extremely passionate and devoted to my industry and want to be a great role model for people like myself.”

When hairdressing student Carlene Stewart first came to Box Hill Institute, she set herself a goal to finish the Certificates II and III in Hairdressing in half the time.

She began in late 2003 and finished the two certificates in a year and a half—less than half the standard required time for completion.

Plus Carlene’s work has been so exceptional that she won the Pursuit of Excellence Award for the 2005 Outstanding Student of the Year – Apprentice Awards.

An excited Carlene thanked her teachers, employer and family for supporting her during her studies.

“Hairdressing for me goes far beyond just being a job. It’s an extraordinary art form. When I transform a customer on the outside, it transforms them on the inside too,” she said.

“I was thrilled at my result in finishing in half the time and it was made possible due to the program being self-paced and I was able to fast track and do a lot of theory at home.”

Carlene said the on-the-job experience she gained at the hairdressing salon Sharde at The Glen Shopping Centre involved being trained “one-on-one by the best of the best”.

“My employer Vince is constantly coaching me to become the best possible hairdresser,” she said.

Carlene said after she finished her apprenticeship she intended to complete further studies at Box Hill Institute enabling her to become a trainer in the hairdressing industry.

“I’m extremely passionate and devoted to my industry and want to be a great role model for people like myself,” she said.
