“I participated at the Australian samurai karate championships a few years ago. I also did a free falling course to overcome my fear of heights.”
A pain in the neck turned out to be a lucky charm for electrotechnology graduate Brent Tribe.
The third year apprentice was recently in a serious motorbike accident and had to wear a neck brace for several months.
However, his injuries didn’t stop him from becoming a finalist in the 2007 Outstanding Student of the Year Awards – Apprentice Awards.
The Certificate III in Electrotechnology Building Services student said the accident gave him the opportunity to reassess his life.
“I have had a lot of time to think about my actions and I’m trying to reframe my everyday thoughts to a positive frame of mind,” he said.
Brent said he often lived on the edge in both his personal and professional lives.
“I participated at the Australian samurai karate championships a few years ago. I also did a free falling course to overcome my fear of heights,” he said.
“I needed to do it because in this industry you’re often on tall ladders and high roofs—I work predominantly in the city on high rises.”
Brent said working in a potentially dangerous industry made him conscious of complying with occupational health and safety standards.
“The majority of sites we go on are union sites so when we use ladders we can’t go further than the third last rung on the ladder,” he said.
