Student Testimonial – Brent Ellis

"The Cisco Systems Andrew Jackson Memorial Scholarship was an incentive for prospective students."

When Box Hill Institute computer technology student Brent Ellis discovered he was the recipient of the 2005 Cisco Systems Andrew Jackson Memorial Scholarship, he had his whole street up in arms.

“I was pulling out of the driveway to go to work when Dad pulled in and checked the mail,” Brent said.

“He pulled out a letter addressed to me. As soon as I read ‘congratulations’ I got out the car and started jumping in the middle of the road.

“Mum came out of the house, we were all ecstatic. There were cars tooting at us and people were yelling out. It was fantastic.”

The Cisco Systems Andrew Jackson Memorial Scholarship covers all Box Hill Institute tuition fees including textbooks, course materials and $100 a week for living expenses.

The winner is invited to attend several CISCO work experience sessions and receives a trip to California to attend Networkers, a computer technology conference.

“I didn’t have a clue if I’d win … I was excited when I found out I’d got an interview,” Brent said.

Brent enrolled to complete Box Hill Institute’s Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering after completing secondary school.

He said the Cisco Systems Andrew Jackson Memorial Scholarship was a great incentive for prospective students to come to Box Hill Institute.

“I had been looking around at other institutions and courses because there were other things I’d wanted to do,” Brent said.

“It was the scholarship that made me come and find out about Box Hill Institute.”

Brent’s dream is to own a business or work in a telecommunications company.

“It’d be good to work in the industry in a company where I can move up,”’ he said.
