"The teachers at Box Hill Institute are really great people and are so encouraging and supportive."
For many women having a child is the beginning of a new career but for Yvonne Vincent it was the inspiration she needed to train to become a florist.
“After having my son Cody I received so many flowers,” explained the Rotary Club of Box Hill Achievement Award winner.
“I love drawing and photography and I thought a career in Floristry would allow me to express my artistic flair.”
Yvonne is now well on the way to fulfilling her dream after completing her Certificate II in Floristry at Box Hill Institute last year.
“Flowers are essentially another artistic form that you can use,” she said. “There are so many colours and variations to be used in so many different ways. “At the Flower Show for instance we used them as costumes, in hairclips, it’s not just about placing them in a vase.”
Yvonne was recently awarded Box Hill Institute’s scholarship for students studying Certificate III. The scholarship assists with tuition costs.
Yvonne said by assisting her to complete her training, the scholarship also meant she would be able to return to the workforce.
“The students get to help out in so many things,” she said. “We develop our skills and it is fun as well. The teachers at Box Hill Institute are really great people and are so encouraging and supportive.
“I would like to work in a Florist and develop my skills in Floristry as well as in small business,” she said.
