“On my second day they told me about a full-time job they had going. I joked about getting it with them and then I actually went for the interview and the position.”
Laboratory technician student Wendy Lanigan has turned a science diploma into a full-time job thanks to IG Science in Rowville.
While completing the Diploma of Laboratory Technology last year, Wendy applied for an internship with the new company and soon found herself employed full time.
“I haven’t actually completed the full two years of my diploma yet but I’m not ruling out a return to the Institute,” she said.
Wendy said she heard about the internship through another student in September last year.
“It was a position that would involve the establishment of a new company, which meant there would be a lot of testing of equipment and new products,” she said.
Wendy said four Box Hill Institute students and one RMIT student were offered internships.
“On my second day they told me about a full-time job they had going. I joked about getting it with them and then I actually went for the interview and the position,” she said.
“I started full-time late October last year just after finishing the first year of the diploma. I had to come back to do my exams, but IG Science was very understanding.”
“I’m hoping to settle into the quality testing and analysis side of things eventually but at the moment I’m a jack-of-all-trades—admin, testing, quality, everything,” she said.
Wendy said it was a confronting experience to return to study while being a mother of four, with no scientific background or knowledge.
“Luckily I had great support from my husband and family. I thought that I should just jump in the deep end and go for it,” she said.
