Student Testimonial – Tony Van De Hoef

"Box Hill Institute has been quite good...the teachers have all been pretty great, they’ll answer all your questions and find out something for you if you need to know it."

When Tony Van De Hoef’s name was announced as the Box Hill’s best Apprentice in the 2004 Box Hill Institute Outstanding Student of the Year Awards, he wouldn’t have believed his ears.

“It’s quite exciting,” he said. “With this award it means that people are noticing your dedication and enthusiasm in your commitment.”

Upon graduating Year 12 with Koo-Wee Rup Secondary School, Tony found his first job to be unstimulating. “I couldn’t handle sitting in front of computers all day...I’ve always been pretty mechanical minded...very hands on,” he said.

The decision to enrol at Box Hill Institute for his trade school training was not Tony’s, it was his employer’s. “He knew about Box Hill Institute as he’d had other apprentices who had trained here so he was obviously very pleased with the results,” he said.

“Box Hill Institute has been quite good...the teachers have all been pretty great, they’ll answer all your questions and find out something for you if you need to know it,” Tony said.

After completing his apprenticeship Tony hopes to run his own company, but for the moment he is just taking one step at a time. However, believes the award will help promote his business. “Winning this award will certainly help me later on as I can prove to people I’m good at my trade...it’s certainly a nice surprise,” he said.
