Student Testimonial – Sigrid Peterson

“I met all the big stars and it was long hours but I loved it. This is the only thing I have ever wanted to do and have a passion for.”

Network Ten is sponsoring a $7,500 scholarship for a Box Hill Institute broadcast TV student in honour of two former employees Laura Irwin and Peter Mastrogiannis, who tragically lost their lives in 2006.

The recipient of the inaugural Network Ten Laura Irwin & Peter Mastrogiannis Perpetual Scholarship is newly-enrolled student Sigrid Petersen.

Sigrid, 19, said without this scholarship, she would not have been able to do the broadcast TV course, which is available only at Box Hill Institute. Other related courses focus on film rather than television.

“My mum’s got MS and my dad’s a full-time carer for her. We just wouldn’t have been able to afford to pay $7,500 a year,” she said.

“I had enrolled in a multimedia course in case I didn’t get this scholarship. I feel privileged to be chosen, I’m stoked.”

Sigrid has long been an avid user of the family’s digital video camera, studied media in Year 12, and did work experience at Channel 9’s football department when she was in Year 10.

“I met all the big stars and it was long hours but I loved it. This is the only thing I have ever wanted to do and have a passion for,” she said.

Sigrid, who prefers being behind the camera rather than in front, already has in mind the types of shows she would like to work on.

“I love surfing and football and sports, otherwise kids’ shows,” she said.
