Student Testimonial – Shannon Crowhurst

"When I could see the passion in the lecturer about his subject, it empowered me to learn."

Receiving a redundancy package was the chance for a new beginning for Box Hill Institute graduate Shannon Crowhurst.

"For a lot of people, a tragic event is a reason why they change their lives," Shannon said.

Shannon had been dissatisfied with his previous occupation and after his redundancy he decided to make a career change.

Now a designer for an engineering company, he has been so successful that he was a finalist in the 2005 Outstanding Student of the Year Awards – Vocational category.

His opportunity arose when Shannon’s father-in-law offered him a position as a draftsman. "It was his encouragement to further my engineering skills," Shannon said.

Shannon decided to enrol in the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology at Box Hill Institute while working full-time as a draftsman.

"Two years of hard work and study and I am now achieving my goals in a new and exciting career," he said.

Shannon believed his success could be attributed to the Institute’s teaching methods.

"When I could see the passion in the lecturer about his subject, it empowered me to learn," he said.

"This gave me the willingness to want to further myself and seeing the additional benefits in taking on further studies."
