Student Testimonial – Nicole Caffin

“The course taught me so many things I hadn’t learnt about. It really got into the details about the industry.”

Equine studies graduate Nicole Caffin’s passion for horses has helped her rein in the coveted 2006 Australian Vocational Student Prize.
In December last year, the Certificate II in Equine Studies (VET in Schools) student was awarded the prize by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

The prize rewards Year 12 students who demonstrate exceptional skill, commitment and achievement while undertaking an Australian School-based Apprenticeship or a Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools program.
Each student receives a cash prize of $2,000 and a certificate.
Nicole said she was very excited to win.

“I knew that my teacher Heather Wilson had nominated me for the award but only a few people each year actually win it so I didn’t expect to get anything,” she said.

“When I got the letter in the mail telling me I’d won, I couldn’t believe it. It’s nice to be recognised for the hard work you put in.”

Nicole said she would use the prize money to purchase a new horse.

She said the course had taught her a lot more than she had expected when she enrolled in 2005.

“I’ve been riding horses since I was in Grade 5. I’ve always had a passion for them. I was in Year 10 when I heard about the course and thought it would be a fantastic thing to do,” she said.

“It was something I was interested in and I thought I could do well in it. The course taught me so many things I hadn’t learnt about. It really got into the details about the industry.”
