“I love everyday at school; I learn, play and talk music all day – it’s my life’s dream.”
Michael Trappett gave a winning performance and took out Box Hill Institute’s highest accolade, Outstanding Student of the Year for 2002 – Vocational Category, as a result.
“Music has been a big part of my life ever since I was young. My mother sang to us as children and introduced me to a variety of styles of music from George Benson, the Beatles, Abba and even Nana Mouskouri. My brothers and I would beg her to put on album after album, then we would jump around the room with our imaginary instruments.”
After an unsuccessful attempt at Year 11 “because I was more focussed on my music than my studies”, Michael did an apprenticeship and became an electrician. Music continued to play a big role in his life – he worked during the day and played gigs in the evening. He then moved into sales and chose to leave behind a lucrative sales career to follow his dream of becoming a musician.
“Music could no longer stay in the background so I decided to obtain an Advanced Diploma of Music (Commercial) from Box Hill Institute. I love everyday at school; I learn, play and talk music all day – it’s my life’s dream.”
Michael plans to take advantage of Box Hill Institute’s credit transfer arrangements and go to Melbourne University to become a music teacher. “If I can teach my students to love music as I did and inspire them to achieve their dreams, then that will be my one greatest achievement.”
