“The apprenticeship is a great idea, you can learn and still earn a living at the same time. TAFE takes you more in depth about a piece of equipment.”
Matt Tunks says there is more to the security industry than just alarm systems.
Alarms, card access, closed circuit television (CCTV), cameras, electric locks, wireless systems, movement sensors, smoke detectors—Matt loves learning about these automated technologies.
The 21-year-old apprentice has a passion for security technology that has made him a Second Year Apprentice finalist in the 2007 Outstanding Student of the Year Awards.
After trying management roles at a fast food store and a cleaning company, Matt said starting an apprenticeship at Rontech Security was the best move he ever made.
“The apprenticeship is a great idea, you can learn and still earn a living at the same time. TAFE takes you more in depth about a piece of equipment,” he said.
“We might go to work and play with a detector at TAFE and learn how it works, how it operates and why it works and the problems it has.”
Matt said the apprenticeship course, the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Building Services) forced him to learn.
“They teach you relevant information at Box Hill Institute and you can use it at work and in home projects, in automotive, with low voltage items such as your car stereo,” he said.
