Student Testimonial – Laura Berta

“The thing with the Institute was that I found it was much more practical. There was a big emphasis on getting work placement."

Doing your VCE is a daunting and anxious time for many young students. So you would think that if your results won you a Premiers Award, it would change your priorities. Box Hill Institute graduate, Laura Berta was no exception.

Laura said her results helped her realise she had so many more options. “It made me aware of my capabilities in community studies,” she said.

Laura decided to enrol in an Arts/Law course at university. She is currently in her second year.

“I never expected to do law but my marks were so much better than I thought,” she said.

Laura took part in the Vocational Education and Training in Schools program (VETIS), which allows VCE students to combine VCE subjects with practical subjects at TAFE. This meant she could combine her VCE studies at Box Hill Senior Secondary School with Health and Community Services studies at Box Hill Institute.

“The thing with the Institute was that I found it was much more practical. There was a big emphasis on getting work placement,” she said.

“It wasn’t what I’d expected, but our teacher, Rebecca Haisma, was really great,” she said.

“The practical side was what I’d enjoyed the most. I liked the placement and working with kids,” she said.
