"My first month was a real eye-opener into the fascinating world of China and hospitality."
Box Hill Institute’s Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Studies student Katherine Woodruff has a thing for jumping in at the deep end.
In her first year of studying at the Institute, Katherine travelled to Shanghai for six months to train in the front desk with the new international hotel Rendezvous.
Katherine admitted the decision to go overseas wasn’t taken lightly.
"Choosing to go to China was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made, but the opportunity to work in a four-star international hotel was too good to pass up," she said.
In Shanghai, Katherine said she learnt about many Chinese customs as well as the international hospitality industry.
"My first month was a real eye-opener into the fascinating world of China and hospitality," she said. "I’ve come back with a greater knowledge of both."
Katherine said her classes at Box Hill Institute had been excellent preparation for the trip.
As the guest relations officer Katherine was responsible for training other staff.
"This has been the opportunity of a lifetime and I hope more students get the chance to have the same experience," she said.
