Student Testimonial – Katherine Lock

"The teachers and students at Box Hill Institute let me fit right in and the teachers are all amazing florists who all work differently, so it was great to learn from that."

Katherine Lock has always had a central theme to her life. That central theme resulted in her nomination as a finalist in the Box Hill Institute’s Outstanding Student of the Year Awards. How do you say her theme? You say it, with flowers of course.

“I’ve always loved flowers, they have surrounded my whole life,” she explains. “It took me quite some time to realise it was actually a career option.”

Katherine, who is currently completing her Certificate IV in Floristry, explained that she wasn’t sure when she enrolled in the course, just how she would fit in with fellow students. “I’m a much older student than most, so I was surprised when it didn’t matter,” she said.

“The teachers and students at Box Hill Institute let me fit right in and the teachers are all amazing florists who all work differently, so it was great to learn from that.”

Fitting in is just what Katherine does right as her keen attitude and hard work is what led to her nomination. “I guess I’ve revelled in it really,” she said. “Mastering all the techniques and the execution of my ideas. It’s been challenging but I just love it.”

In an unusual twist of irony, Katherine’s dedication to floristry actually meant she was unable to attend the awards night. After winning the Open Section for Floral Design in the Canberra Floriade Festival, along with some considerable prize money, Katherine flew to England to attend the Chelsea Flower show, which meant she could not attend the awards.

“It’s going to be very exciting to be going and at the same time it’s a great honour to be nominated for the award,” she said. “I’ve had terrific support from my teachers.”
