“I love the environment here. At university the teachers can’t dedicate a lot of time to you because they have so many students—you don’t get much feedback ”
It was no fantasy story when professional writing student Justin McIntosh won a recent scholarship.
On 14 December last year, the Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) student was awarded a scholarship sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills worth $700.
Justin said the Rotary Club had been very supportive in awarding the scholarship.
“I think it’s a great thing for Rotary and Box Hill Institute to do for students—especially those struggling financially—it’s a great thing to get those extra dollars,” he said.
Justin said he was very excited when his teachers Euan Mitchell and Helen Milte-Bastow nominated him for the scholarship.
“Euan called me and told me he wanted to nominate me for it. I was so rapt I ran around my house telling everyone,” he said.
“I wasn’t expecting to win it. It’s going to look great on my resumé. It’s not something you get every day as it shows your dedication and commitment to your studies.”
Justin said he had already self-published his first novel Dark Thoughts, a fantasy novel written by him and another writer.
He said self-publishing was a challenging but worthwhile experience.
“I printed 22 copies, which was all I could afford at the time. I sold quite a few of them to people in my classes at the Institute and some of the staff also bought copies,” he said.
Justin said the skills he’d learnt at the Institute helped him to publish the novel.
Justin said he’d enjoyed studying at the Institute.
