"My time at Box Hill Institute has emphasised the value of learning."
Box Hill Institute Diploma of Laboratory Technology graduate Jen Moffatt is no stranger to challenges.
She was a finalist in the 2005 Outstanding Student of the Year Awards – Vocational category.
The nomination was a huge achievement for the student who was struck down with chronic fatigue syndrome in primary school.
Due to her sickness, Jen could not attend high school full time.
Her absences meant she missed out on many educational and social skills that would have helped her gain future employment and develop a social network.
At 19, Jen wanted to become a scientist but her lack of education was a drawback as she was unable to even do basic fractions.
She then decided to enrol at Box Hill Institute to complete the Certificate IV in Science.
Jen said before coming to the Institute she had low-self esteem and poor communication skills.
"My time at Box Hill Institute has emphasised the value of learning," she said.
"I loved the teachers, loved the work and loved the homework and made a lot of friends," she said.
The course gave her enough confidence to finish a diploma course and led her to study the Bachelor of Science at Monash University.
