Student Testimonial – Jacinta Harding

“Competitions keep you on your toes and continually learning,” she said explaining that the florists competing at WorldSkills would be required to make eight different items over the three days.

Little did former Box Hill Institute apprentice Jacinta Harding realise that when she set her heart on becoming a florist it would turn out to be a real test of stamina.

“I have always wanted to be a florist and I only did year 12 because there was no florist position available in Geelong at the time,” she said. “I walked the streets in Geelong visiting florists and dropping off my resume.”

The effort paid off. Jacinta was offered an apprenticeship just as she was about to enrol at university. She is also part of the Victorian team competing at WorldSkills.

Jacinta, who is now working in Ballarat, said she was looking forward to the competition. “Competitions keep you on your toes and continually learning,” she said explaining that the florists competing at WorldSkills would be required to make eight different items over the three days.

“It will be the first time I have seen people from interstate compete, so it will be interesting to see how different their ideas are. If I go away and learn one or two things it’s been a good experience.”

Jacinta said floristry was a “really fun job”. “You get to be creative and use different flowers to brighten people’s days,” she said. “It is changing a lot more now particularly with regard to design. “People are happy to buy tropical flowers– they are prepared to pay for the design of something and modern arrangements, which is good.”
