Student Testimonial – Helen Croome

“During my Box Hill Institute course, I was given the opportunity to learn skills in marketing, promotion, production, event organisation and finance.”

Helen Croome’s passion for film scoring is particularly notable.

Her commitment to this challenging career within the music industry has netted her a nomination as a finalist in the 2007 Outstanding Student of the Year Award Vocational category.

Helen said she had always loved music but it wasn’t until she came to Box Hill Institute that she discovered the art and science of composing music for films.

“I grew up in Albury Wodonga and after high school I moved to Melbourne to study psychology at university but after a year I missed music too much and decided to look for a tertiary music course,” she said.

“When I enrolled at Box Hill Institute, I knew I would be studying a lot of music theory and history but I didn’t realise—and the best thing to come out of it—was my introduction to film scoring.

“Since then that has been my main area of focus.”

Helen completed the Bachelor of Applied Music in 2006 and her goal is now to make a living through freelance film composition.

“I’ve had success with getting a job to compose music for a short film called Sundays, that will be entered into many international film festivals,” she said.

For this, she said the skills she learned at Box Hill Institute in using film scoring software such as Sibelius were invaluable.
