Student Testimonial – Deanna O'Brien

“The competence I have gained has provided me with a solid foundation of confidence and trust in myself, allowing me to achieve milestones set within the field.”

Children’s services student Deanna O’Brien knows there’s no room for child’s play in a serious career.

On 7 June, Deanna became a finalist at the 2006 Outstanding Student of the Year – Vocational Awards.

The Diploma of Children’s Services student said the Institute had helped her develop an appreciation for the theoretical side of her industry.

“Learning has enhanced my motivation to pursue a career in early childhood education,” she said.

“My plan is to work in the field for a few years and then undertake a Bachelor of Education for early childhood.”

Deanna said completing work experience in various child care centres had given her confidence in the industry.

“I can now manage children and plan to further enhance their skills, ongoing development and cater to their strengths, needs and interests,” she said.

“My level of self-reliance has increased greatly over the duration of the course.

“The competence I have gained has provided me with a solid foundation of confidence and trust in myself, allowing me to achieve milestones set within the field.”

Deanna said her on-the-job training allowed her to see industry professionals first hand.

“It gives you an opportunity to see how they facilitate day-to-day care and education experiences for young children,” she said.

Deanna said she hoped to work in the industry before pursuing further education.
