“I don’t think the business would have progressed as quickly as it has if I hadn’t done the NEIS program”
Getting kids to have fun with studying has earned Carol-Ann Starnes an award at the Whitehorse Business Group’s Annual Excellence in Business Awards in March.
Carol-Ann was Highly Commended in the JCI Whitehorse Maroondah Young Achiever Award for her business F.U.N. Tutoring Centre.
She began the business through Box Hill Institute’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) program that helps new business owners with mentoring and financial support.
“The F.U.N. stands for helping your children with their Fundamentals and Understanding the Needs of your child,” she said.
“I offer one-on-one tutoring. It’s an opportunity for the child to receive personal attention and to build the child’s confidence.”
Carol-Ann said she used a multi-sensory approach to tutoring.
“I might use the white board to do an explanation, or use software, worksheets or games to heighten the child’s interest and offer variety,” she said.
“Mine is a less academic approach to tutoring. I’m not saying I don’t want to focus on academics, I definitely want them to achieve but I want them to enjoy it.
She said she was attracting many children with learning difficulties.
“That wasn’t deliberate and I also have children at very advanced levels as well but parents find that my teaching style is working for their children,” she said.
After 12 years of teaching overseas and in Melbourne, Carol-Ann said she had been toying with the idea of starting her own business when she saw an ad for the NEIS program.
“NEIS was very good as an introduction to running one’s own business. It’s helped me a lot with my financials, I’ve joined network groups, and learning about marketing has been well worth it too,” she said.
“I don’t think the business would have progressed as quickly as it has if I hadn’t done the NEIS program.”
